450484 2006-04-29 12:19:00 Steak & Kidney & Mushroom PieI love a good home-style pie, but detest the flavour (and idea) of kidneys. But there's something about steak & kidney that is unbeatable. A trick my mum taught me, to do without kidney but copy the essence of the flavour is to use a goodly amount of ground nutmeg in the steak/onion/mushroom stew. Greg (193)

If you don't like them, why use them, but apparently to decrease the flavour, you soak them in milk overnight first. Then drain them and use them. Not so strong then...

Chicken nuggets and jacket wedges............ with ice cream for afters......

the things we do to keep children eating and happy?

Hmm. I never did that. Son got fed the same as us, if he didn't like a particular vege I left it out but he wasn't allowed to decide he didn't like things without eating some first and being sure he didn't.
He now cooks a wide variety of things and really likes it.

Giving in will probably guarantee they think everything is yuck...

450487 2006-04-29 22:45:00 mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm food

Tex-mex is good. Friend's make theor own tortillas and then you sit around filling themup with meats and vegies and pickles and chillis and sour cream whatever however you want. Yum, I could eat like that for hours except the tortillas run out.

I'm a reformed vegetarian meat and its uses and cooking styles is all a bit new to me.

I cook a great curry with home made chappatti and chutneys and rice and green salad of onions and tomatoes soused in vinegar.

I live alone so I do all the coking. Sometimes glass of wine while you're coking is good but i've leanrt that if you have three or four the meal doesn't get the attention it needs and can get spolit. Like last nights lamb, chick pea and capsicum (garden) curry.

Roasts with all the trimmings are v. good, must have plenty hot thin gravy - can't even understand people who don't make gravy. Other friends got 20 -30 free range chooks we eat one every so often. Good food. I like the idea that it is good to know where the food came from. Not some of this c*****p in the supernakets.

Friends says you should only eat shellfish if you know the person who gathered it.

450488 2006-04-30 00:08:00 salad of onions and tomatoes soused in vinegar.Yumm! AKA kachumber when it has deseeded cucumber chopped in it. It's particularly good when you make it a few hours in advance. I like it in cider vinegar with a good sprinkle of salt flakes and fresh ground pepper, with a squeeze of lemon, a few torn coriander leaves. And if my main dish isn't too hot I'll add some sliced fresh chillies, or a few dashes of chilli sauce. Greg (193)

well as it was blended families weekend and last time we had full roast with veges and the trimmings........yum and it went down very well with the tribe...:D so this time it was the kids turn to choose the meal...........normally we dont give them the choice and they have to eat what we eat or go hungry.

Got to start thinking for the next one i guess.........:D

We buy steak and kidney from the butcher already cut up and mixed. Then we buy an OX kidney and cut it up and add to the butcher's S & K. We find the sheeps kidney on it's own lacking in flavour. Then throw in a few halved mushrooms for xtra flavour.
Yummy!

That's exactly what we do as well.
