450394 2006-04-30 02:16:00 There are no houses in Invercargill for $78000.
Out in the wops a bit is another thing however....

Hehe, to North Islanders, Invercargill is the wops!!!....LOL

450396 2006-04-30 10:53:00 Well said kwaka I think they've all gone off the rails myself. They live in fear and suspicion of one another and hide in gilded boxes gagging on gadegetry and indulgent luxuries to soothe their frayed nerves. What a waste.
What an extraordinary (and sad) perspective Mark and kwaka. Aucklanders are just ordinary kiwis like you and everybody else. We are not defined by where we live, anymore than you are. I can't say I've noticed any gilded boxes around my neighbourhood, and the last gagging I heard was when Invercargill's mayor was Dancing with the Stars (he of the upturned Holden).

If Auckland was wiped off the map overnight by some natural disaster, the lives of all in the rest of New Zealand would change dramatically, and not for the better. You would all fall on very hard times indeed. Our nation's economy depends on the consumer, industrial and financial input of the Auckland region, just as we depend on the rest of our countrymen.

If we are cut, do we not bleed as you do?

We too can leave the keys in our car all day, though simple commonsense (and the requirements of our insurance policies) suggest that it would be imprudent to do so, or to leave our doors unlocked when not at home. That is simply inviting trouble.

There are crims everywhere in NZ, but in Auckland at least we can go to our front gate of a morning without fear of being executed by some lunatic with a rifle, or have people driving into our property in the dead of night to steal fuel or quad bikes or any of the other rural crime targets. We are short on marijuana plantations, cattle rustlers and nocturnal sheep butcherers as well.

So, Jafa jokes are ok, but keep it in perspective, and don't get overwrought by the sale of a carpark, or its purchase by somebody with the smarts to recognise a good opportunity when they see it. Smacks of jealousy to me, and I am envious too! It was a great investment and I'd have been into it like a randy dog if the opportunity had been presented to me.

Cheers

Wow .

Seriously, You cant compare the lifestyle or crime in Auckland to anywhere else in NZ, Nor are you short on crazyies with guns, Weed plantations or motorbike theives . Auckland is in short a miserable crowded mess . Any person who has managed to leave the place is better off for doing so .

Even Aucklanders I hope do their best to persuade international visitors to bypass Auckland and see what the rest of the country is like as Auckland has none of the positive attributes that make our country so great and all of the negatives that come with being a cesspit .

I prescribe a holiday, Make sure you wave out when you go through Wanganui . . . .

Nah you're misguided mate. Auckland can only be regarded as the world's favourite city... a lot of people who are unaware forget about the stretches of beaches, the ease of access to natural highlights of the Waitakeres and Eastern hills, the local drop-dead gorgeous waterfalls, the modern facilities that many other NZ centres copy, the beauty of all the water around the city, the fantastic multi-culture reflected in our restaurants, the fantastic gulf islands, the ease of access to the mid North Island and the Upper North North Island, the FANTASTIC climate (which doesn't have the extremes of many other parts of NZ, let alone the world!).

Sure... if I had to live anywhere in the world it would be Napier, along with it's close-to-highest-crime-rate-in-NZ, but Auckland is next tops.

Great beaches, Maybe. But how do you get to them? Spend hours in traffic, and when you get there hoons running wild with there bottles of beer annoying everyone. Crowds everywhere. Nowhere to go for a quiet beer. I remember about fourty years ago when a new pub was opened in New Lynn. The locals where happy with if for about a week. Then they renamed it ,"The Flying Jug" and left it to the hoons.
I have not lived in Auckland for fourty years. In fact I've only been up there about three time in the past thirty five years.
The first thing I noticed when I was last there is that there are no trees.Just bare dirty streets. And from what I read, if a tree does try to grow there the council rushes in and cuts it down. Most in need of repair. And if you go anywhere up there ,there's nowhere to park when you get there.
At least there's still plenty of small towns with tree lined streets with no traffic jams.
I will never ever see Auckland again. And that doesn't worry me in the least.

450400 2006-04-30 20:17:00 errrrrrrrr........That works out at $18 per day

nnnooooooo.........that works out at $213 per day for a year......
drcspy (146)
450401 2006-04-30 20:20:00 at that rate it might very well be cheaper to park where one would be fined rather than towed......however if one has that sort of money to throw around then saving a few thousand a year aint gonna be a consideration I'd suggest..... drcspy (146)
450402 2006-04-30 20:58:00 I get sick of the Auckland versus the Mainland thing . And it is mostly Mainlanders that slag it .

Yes it does have some nice beaches, bush walks and tons of excellent restaurants .
Yes it takes ages to get to them, crawling along in 1st or 2nd gear .
Yes it is a huge overcrowded pit .
Public transport is a joke, thats why most people drive .

I prefer uncrowded, close to all the best bits of NZ and a nicer climate which is why I left . Auckland to me, is almost like Singapore - hot and steamy, not my thing .

But its just another part of NZ . Wellington, in my opinion, is as bad . Traffic there sucks, its ugly and hilly . The motorways are stupid . It also has the politicians . . . So why doesn't everyone pick on Wellington?

Theres this impression that everyone in Auckland lives in Remuera, is filthy rich and lives in some huge plastic mansion . Its not true . Theres plenty of poverty there, plenty of run-down hovels, plenty of ordinary neighbourhoods with little pre-fab type houses filled with people just trying to make a living . And thats why a lot of people stay there - JOBS . Take a look at the job listings for Auckland each day - then compare it to anywhere in the South . Especially anywhere that isn't a main city .

People kept telling me oh it costs less to live down South or elsewhere - no it doesn't . About the only thing thats cheaper is insurance . Everything else is no different or more expensive .

So some guy bought a carpark . If it was in Wellington would anyone go on about it so much? So he's rich . So what . Its not like everyone in Auckland buys carparks .

My son doesn't even own a car - he bikes (pushbike) to his job . He rents a pokey little one bedroom flat . He has no money . He lives in Auckland .

450403 2006-04-30 22:22:00 Fair enough Billy T I was giving an extreme view . I"ve lived in orcs several times and like the place but the point about this thread is not whether or not non Aucklanders want to see the place blown off the map and leave us all in penury but quite simply the traffic sucks!

hence the price for the carpark .

When I lived in orcs in the late eighties my wife and I were spending 20 $ a week on on busing (each) just to get to work, so we bought a car . We both worked at the same place and where our bosses parked in a big car-park block there was this odd small space between their parks and some or other part of the structure can't remember but it was just big enough to squeeze a toyata starlet in . We made the guy in the box at the entrance a cake every so often .

Now that was a good carpark in Orcs .
