696429 2008-08-12 06:34:00 @ Speedy,

I have completed your instructions. Thanks. I never had any inclination not to follow them. I was just looking for a clarification, so I don't understand your reason for the threat, "If you dont want to listen, I wont reply again".

@wainuitech,

Thanks for the explanation on WinMX. I won't use any p2p, again. I am downloading the apps in your sig. Will take awhile on dialup.

Do you recommend to uninstall AVG free Antivirus & install one of the others?

696430 2008-08-12 06:47:00 AVG seems to have " lost ground" lately, because of various reasons, it appears to to be a bit unstable sometimes and some people have problems, and seems to miss items it shouldn't sometimes.

Generally speaking around here the current recommendations for antivirus software are :

Free = Avast

Paid = Nod32

As mentioned in previous post the Nod has a 30 day trial - so you can always try it to see if you ant to buy it later.

P2P programs are a good way to get infections , not the actual programs (sometimes they can be infected as well) but the files that are downloaded can cause LOTS of troubles.

Dial up, hmmmmm Ok if you have access to a high speed connection you can download and put them on CD/ Pen drive and install, other wise download in this order ( unless you started already) Ccleaner, malwarebytes, Spyware terminator, Super Antispyware.

As a suggestion once those have been run, post another hijack Log. Once again -- If you want help setting up Nod ( if you get it) just ask.:)

Sorry for delays in responding.

Thanks greatly for your advice (& Speedy, too). I had another reinfection (which included infections of all the *.exe files downloaded from your, & Speedy's sig:mad:) so decided to take my PC right back to an early Ghost image & reinstall from there using Avast 4.7.

Have to say, it appears my reinfections could have been from a programme which I have used for years. And none of the other antivirus I have used over the years, including Norton have EVER shown an issue with it. Avast showed an issue when copying from a CD to HDD.

Have deleted it. Also, my backup CD containing the programmes & apps showed a trojan inside a modified BIOS from an older motherboard: deleted. Although, I never had any issues with it on my previous setup.

Also, going to use Firefox 3 as default browser for first time. Like some of the options, just going through the learning curve of custom settings.
