| 696714 | 2008-08-12 05:29:00 | Hi everyone This is a bit of a shot in the dark I know, but just in case any of you may be able to help me getting back to my old dream machine... Over the years I have run FF and Opera on my machine at different times without even a glitch. Just recently, though, this has changed. My browser started to "hang" as such, taking very long time to load pages on sites that use Java and/or Flash, and sometimes I have to restart the browser to get it out of it's torpor. I thought it may have been a fault with FF and therefore downloaded Opera and did a run with that but encountered the same problems. The strange thing is that I have not installed anything lately that could contribute to this, I have tested the memory with MemScope from Micro2000 and found everything working properly, I have uninstalled and re-enstalled Java and Flash player, to no avail. I also checked the system for nasties with hijack this, spybot and did a full scan with my security suite from nod and nothing was found. I am baffled and stumped. What could it be? I run a XP Home on a packard bell with 1 gb of memory, seagate 250gb HD and ati radeon video card. (please let me know if you need more info) I also have a NOD SmartSecurity as a protection which incorporates virus scan, firewall and anti-adware. Any idea will be more than welcome. Regards Sanco |

Also go to add/remove programs in the control panel, remove all versions of java and go to www.java.com and download the latest Java Runtime. You can post a HijackThis (www.trendsecure.com) log too, we can made doubly sure there is nothing running that could cause the freezing. |

| 696717 | 2008-08-12 07:12:00 | Check your internet speed http://www.speedtest.net/ . Clean out your cache keep cache size to a minimum. Check your modem cable. Run msconfig-startup and see how many programs you have running(reduce to a minimum). Recheck your firewall settings. Are you downloading automatic updates? Run Windows Taskmanager-networking and see if there is any activity you cannot identify. Run ccleaner/scan/defrag. Just a few suggestions |

I don't have any addons in FF Speedy, that is the biggest mystery really. I have already re-installed the latest versions on Flash and Java, but I guess another wouldn't hurt wratterus, I'll give it another go then. Cheers. Hi PPp, yes I've done the msconfig already (in fact is one of my paranoias to keep it to a minimum :dogeye: Talking I will try to keep the cache to a minimum though, what size would you suggest should be a reasonable one? |

| 696720 | 2008-08-12 08:26:00 | Hi Sanco. I use Opers 99% of the time and have cache set at 5MB but tick the empty on exit box.(possibly guilty of not following my own advice?) | PPp (9511) | ||
| 696721 | 2008-08-12 22:21:00 | Thank you speedy for taking the time to analize the hijack this log, I will fix that app.ini tonight when I get back home and will let you know of the result. PPp: thanks for the heads up on amount of cache; I will adjust this arvo. I also had a look at java's cache and it is set at 1gig by default, should I tinker with it too or just let it be? I use Opera as well, I love it but on some websites it refuses to save the passwords and I find this quite annoying, anyway I get the same - if on a lesser extent - issue with Opera and that is why I think it is a problem with either java, flash or some corruption on the registry...damn registry! If the latest tweaks won't work I may have to bite the bullet and do a clean re-install of XP I guess, but I am extremely reluctant to do so unless I really have to. |

| 696722 | 2008-08-12 22:23:00 | Did you update Adobe Flash Player? Just doing that can fix so many little annoying browser issues. | wratterus (105) | ||
| 696723 | 2008-08-13 03:04:00 | I assume that by downloading and the latest flash player I get the most up-to-date app... am I assuming wrong here and check for updates to the player? | Sanco (683) | ||
