697562 2008-08-16 01:02:00 I am trying to troubleshoot a DSL connection for a friend, their router is fine as a laptop plugs into it directly and connects instantly.

The desktop is not connecting to the DSL at all, its a new DSL service and the desktop has never connected successfully to it.

I have it here and my connection is fine but I can still not get her PC to connect.

Anything I can check?

697563 2008-08-16 01:12:00 Is there a firewall on the desktop that could be interfering?

IP settings could be incorrect.

Faulty NIC on the desktop?

697564 2008-08-16 01:22:00 Firewall is disabled
IP settings probably are, more info?
NIC??

The repair option says invalid IP, I don't know a lot about this area of things.

697565 2008-08-16 01:32:00 Go into the properties / TCP/IP of the LAN connection. In Network connections, if its XP

Whats in there??

Its sounds like the ip whatever is here isnt a valid IP for the router (or windows). Which is why its saying its an invalid IP.

697567 2008-08-16 01:53:00 Can you ping the router.

LAN connection properties is it enabled, also select repair there.

Have a look in IE/Internet options/Connections
Click on Lan settings at the bottom and untick everything there especially proxy settings.

697568 2008-08-16 02:02:00 Or put an ip in there under properties/tcp/ip manually (valid router IP's) and point it to the router.

And put the ISP's DNS server ips in the bottom

Is the LED on the NIC doing something like is it on or flashing?

Or is the LED on the router (or whatever) lit up, (for the connection/s that are plugged into it)?

697569 2008-08-16 02:36:00 Router is fine, its working for this machine and powering the wireless.

I am not sure what manual IP to put in there
I pinged the router 10.1.1.1 and got nothing

Its been aquiring a network address for an hour and still showing up as a invalid IP when its susposed to detect the IP

697570 2008-08-16 02:41:00 So, whats the brand/model of the modem/router then Speedy Gonzales (78)
697571 2008-08-16 02:44:00 try downloading and running Winsockfix (www.snapfiles.com) your TCP/IP stack could be corrupted, this program removes the current one and rebuilds it from fresh. wainuitech (129)
