697379 2008-08-15 02:06:00 A friend asked me to check his lappie for virii and "things", to which I agreed. Usually I burn all the needed software onto a CD and then onload it to the lappie (with all updated signature files). I then run the scans and once clean, install a few basic programs that I set for auto-update.

I've got no knowledge on slaving any drive neither do I want to.

Any other suggestions.

697380 2008-08-15 02:15:00 Just use your normal method? roddy_boy (4115)
697381 2008-08-15 02:28:00 Slaving means taking the drive out of one machine and putting it into another as a secondary drive - the best place is in place of the CD/DVD drive.

After the drive has been cleaned, put it back in the first machine and replace the CD/DVD drive.

697382 2008-08-15 02:31:00 Your normal method should be fine in most cases, you can also do online scans if you like with the likes of this (www.eset.com) from ESET (makers of NOD32).

Salving isn't actually that difficult if you know the hardware side of things, its usefull when a systems that full of nasties it can't even boot.

She said she didn't want any knowledge of slaving drives.

697384 2008-08-15 02:34:00 Well, if you want to waste cds .

And dont want to know how to slave hdd's (which would probably be easier) .

There's not much we can tell you, and no point asking

697386 2008-08-15 22:02:00 Your usual method is the most common method I use (though I have all files on a USB key for XP onwards/CD for older comps).
Slaving I really only do when the other drive has problems at bootup or is running extraordinarily slow

697387 2008-08-16 00:48:00 Hi guys

No, I don't want to slave because I do not want to open his lappie and b*gger everything up - as I am prone to do.

I used a USB thingie for all the files.

His lappie was infected by the same one that Wainuitech described earlier - Windows Antivirus 2008, and a few others. After about 14 hrs I think it's clean. I also installed all the better progs like the 30day Nod, Malwarebytes, etc.

697388 2008-08-16 04:51:00 slaving a drive can be very beneficial in many ways particularly when trying to kill off nasties. This is because the slaved drive is essentially 'dormant' ....no nasties can be 'active' on the drive thus they're more easily killed drcspy (146)
