| 452443 | 2006-05-05 13:32:00 | General Motors has stopped production of its sleek EV1 electric car, and will not likely build more due to four years of waning interest from customers . Here ( . pub . umich . edu/daily/2000/jan/01-12-2000/news/11 . html" target="_blank">www . pub . umich . edu) Fortunately the news isnt quite as bad as it sounds . They are moving to a newer 3 engine technology . But the real point is that even with mandatory laws in states such as California requiring new types of cars, GM could only sell/lease 600 EV1s . I'd guess that in NZ we'd have to pay $5/litre before we'd individually make a serious move to public transport and electric vehicles . I freely admit that I cannot imagine not driving myself anywhere and everywhere I want . What do you guys and gals think? |

| 452445 | 2006-05-05 13:44:00 | me thinks we will be the last who can drive around gas guzzeling, Loud, polluting ,hellfire machines,...so no skin off my nose, The next generation won't know what they are missing, and we still have oil for the time being. I would say the big issue for the movers and shakers is what will drive their machines of war, As has been proven in the past, No fuel means garenteed loss (which is why the yankee doodle dandies have...uh...liberated Iraq) Anyhow, Im sure the technology (meaning an alternative to combustion engines) will almost immediatly make the leap into a useable item, as soon as we have another world war and the powers that be put all their efforts into the wide spread killing of people who live in other countries. |

| 452446 | 2006-05-05 14:41:00 | General Motors has stopped production of its sleek EV1 electric car, and will not likely build more due to four years of waning interest from customers... Chrysler/Dodge will be selling a full-sized (read: humoungous, unpark-able, heavy-drinker) hybrid SUV called a Durango. Has a 4.7 litre Hemi-V8. Fuel consumption will still be much much worse than a normal small Japanese wagon with the same cabin space, but hey, since the government is offering some concessions/tax dodges for hybridness and the punters still want humoungous, unpark-able, heavy-drinkers, why not? Sounds like a sick joke, but google for it if you don't believe me. GM will follow suit no doubt. As for getting people out of their cars, quality public transport, urban planning, education, government discipline - all these are needed otherwise you would just needlessly torture commuters. Unfortunately, for a city like Auckland, all four requirements will never be adequately met. |

Think about it: a population who votes for GWBush twice is just not going to have the forsight to use vehicles that actually help the environment and the oil-dependent economy. | Strommer (42) | ||

| 452451 | 2006-05-06 01:10:00 | My apologies to all. The post was prompted by a news report I read a few days ago that one of the American car manufacturers was ceasing production of it's hybrid because no-one was buying them. When I googled, obviously I came up with the wrong source. :o However to try and regain some credibility, anyone heard of air-powered cars? Check this (auto.howstuffworks.com) out. |

I suspect that will go the way of the electric car. |
