452155 2006-05-04 11:44:00 Hi guys,
As some of you may notice, I like my music.

My question is, is fruity loops available from a shop in disc form or can you only download? The reason i ask is I do not want to make a transaction over the net.

And secondly is there a music program similar to fruity loops that is available in stores?

Cheers in advance. :help:

452157 2006-05-05 01:50:00 Note also that FruityLoops has now been rebranded to FL Studio. Version 6.0 is now out. Erayd (23)

452159 2006-05-06 05:37:00 If you're like me, I don't have time to become (nor do I want to become) a full-fledged sound engineer; besides, there's something wrong with a person who fiddles with knobs and switches all day long.

I use a buddy's studio when I feel creative and he lets me use his sound editor program.

It's called: Garage Band (arstechnica.com) ....not too expensive...but a killer application.....if you have a MAC, that is....$49 US last I looked.....

He lets me use it in a full sound lab...it works well and we haven't run outta sounds and effects yet after 4 years...lays a good drum down, or anything you might want.

GarageBand "turns your Mac into an anytime, anywhere recording studio packed with hundreds of instruments and a recording engineer or two for good measure, all assuming you don't have an iBook which doesn't have an audio input: (Steve Jobs.)

Definition of a guy who hangs around with musicians: a drummer! [rimshot]:D

452160 2006-05-08 07:23:00 I used to use a playstation game called music 2000. It was simple to use and had some killer sounds on it. I hooked the ps to my mixer and that worked well, unfortuanetly I cant find the music 2000 anymore either.

I did have a go on fruity loops awhile back, mainly I want to be able to manipulate drums. And I guess simple keyboard lines too.

452161 2006-05-09 13:10:00 One of my mates is an electronica artist, so I've had a chance to use his copy quite a bit before (FL Studio / FruityLoops). He has had every release from version 4 (currently has v6.0 XXL), and I have to say it's a killer piece of software. I find it extremely well designed, with just about every feature you could want, and a lot of demo projects which show you how to use things. I would recommend buying another VST synth for it though (I recommend Vanguard & Sytrus) - as when you get more advanced the default ones packaged with it can get a bit frustrating.

You can also tweak every single aspect of the end sound that is produced, and the software is suitable for producing entire songs - although you may find it easier to use something like Adobe Audition (i.e. do the song in multiple tracks) if you find CPU usage getting too high.

WARNING - this is a total CPU killer! Increasing the buffer helps, but it's easily possible to have the CPU sitting on 100% with a lot of skipping - you can create some very complex sounds. The machine my mate has for this (Athlon64 3000+, 1GB RAM) is good for most things, but it's still easy to bring to its knees. Note that this isn't software inefficiency though - I suspect any other piece of software would use as much. The other thing you will notice is CPU usage while the track isn't playing - this is because FL Studio constantly runs the FX processing, as it is designed to also accept external MIDI/wave input as well as normal, scored input.

You can download a song I created a while back (blog.pcresolutions.co.nz) to give you some idea of what it's capable of - although I'm not that good, so this definitely doesn't stretch it to its limits. I believe this software is also (and certainly has been) used by DJ Tiesto.

I have also heard a lot of good things about Steinberg CuBase, although I haven't tried this - however it's supposedly not as good for beginners.
