Agreed. This is often overlooked. People see a battery but never think about the huge mining/manufacturing infrastructure behind it. That has a cost in energy and environmental terms. Then there is the small matter of dealing with all the heavy metals in the battery when it is finished with.

Nevertheless electric/hybrid vehicles are likely to be common until a better technology is developed. I can't see us going back to horses and carts. Name a time in recent history when technology was given up and humans went back to a more primitive ways.
