Too late to remove avast i have fitted another hard drive
So I made a mistake by fitting hard drive without formatting it?
How do I format hardrive ?
After formatting it is activation still there?

This is a timeline of my disaster

Installed avast as advised by wratt instal went bad ,errors wont uninstall
Did changes to hijack this log as advised by wratt and it wont do system restore
fitted hard drive from another computer( have cd for this hard drive)
did repair with xp got it activated by phone
No network connection I guess its because the motherboard has no drivers for LAN

Request instructions for what to do next

Correct, if the hdd you put in the new system still had Windows on it, (It'll have ALL of the hardware that was in the old system, as you found out in Device manager).

You cant do this. You will have probs, or the system you put the hdd in will probably crash, sooner or later

As you said in a previous post

I went to control panel, system, hardware but the drivers are shown for motherboard of old computer I think.

You need an XP CD. But if the CD you've got CAME with the old computer (like a recovery cd, or OEM CD), you cant use it on another computer. What does the CD that you've got, say on it?

No you'll have to activate it again (if you can)

How do I format hardrive i didnt see an option when I ran repair
Should I put the xp cd in again and run a full install instead of repair would that format the hardrive and take out the old drivers.
In the w98 se days I remebered typing format C: in dos
Do I need drivers for floppy, dvd drive cd writers

Thanks

697607 2008-08-16 10:12:00 If the XP Pro CD is bootable, go into the BIOS, then change the bootdisk to the CD. Save the settings, then reboot, it'll boot to the XP setup
screen. Follow what it says.

Then you can format / partition etc and reinstall XP. Have the CD / XP key ready you'll need it. This will remove everything on the hdd

No you dont need cd or floppy drivers. Once XP has been formatted / reinstalled they'll work

You'll need the chipset / LAN / soundcard drivers, so you can install them after you reinstall XP

Yes the cd is bootable because today I changed bios and run repair with xp cd
Does the boot order have to be changed back in the bios ie does the xp instal change the order

697609 2008-08-16 19:19:00 Once you've formatted / reinstalled XP (not a repair), yup you'll have to change the bootdisk to the hard drive.

So, it'll boot from the hdd.

697610 2008-08-16 21:46:00 Not always I just leave mine set on boot from Hard drive second and DVD drive first saves me having to change it if it crashes and I need to run a bootable repair CD gary67 (56)
697611 2008-08-16 21:58:00 Well u dont have to, just dont leave the cd or dvd in it Speedy Gonzales (78)
