| 453154 | 2006-05-09 03:01:00 | Actually that is EXACTLY what it is really like... That and platoon. And deliverance, oops I meant Apocalypse Now. And what's that movie where Gomer Pyle goes crazy and shoots the atypical drill sarge? (great movie, really realistic - especially the jelly donut part). Full Metal Jacket - Stanley Kubrick. From the book "Short Timers". A far better movie than Platoon. |

| 453157 | 2006-05-18 13:05:00 | When you get the chance to drink DONT as very early the next day like 05:00 hrs you will be doing THE CHUNDER RUN around camp doing sprints from one power pole, jog to the next and sprint to the next, jog to the next etc, etc, Oh and dont forget the FIREMAN carry were you carry someone accross your shoulders and they chunder on you while your carrying them 100m and then they carry you 100m,etc,etc, Oh,I nearly forgot the sit ups and push ups as well . Its not a pretty sight when someone chunders while doing a sit up and it goes all over there nice ironed, clean shirt and shorts, legs etc . Good fun to watch though!! While your at home get fit then you have an advantage,do heaps of running, push ups,sit ups(can do in the tv ad breaks, before you go to bed/when you get up,make it a habbit,it will help . And name everything, and I mean everthing,as you will be useing the washing and drying machines with your mates . And socks and stuff will get mixed up and lost etc . Be the quiet one, dont be cheecky or get smart or disrespect anyone including your mates . If you do life can be made hard for you . Allways keep your bed space clean and tidy and your room as well,if you get some down time then polish shoes,boots,wash/dry your gear, ironing etc . Because you get inspections every day and snap inspections as well . If your gear is not up to standard it gets thrown on the floor, out the window etc, that includes your bed as well,if its not smooth and there are no hospital corners done etc . Its funny when you get a whole pile of stuff chucked in the middle of the room or around the room or outside and your stuff is mixed up with everyones, thats another reason to name it . Thats what happened when I was on Basic anyway . Been there, done that, alls good!! 2/1 RNZIR (still serving) |

| 453159 | 2007-09-11 03:56:00 | I am ex Air Farce, grunt training wouldnt be much different just wear green. You will learn heaps and will be able to look after yourself for ever. As someone said dont start smoking or drinking heavily just because the majority are. Watch out for religious tossers never dob in a mate, the NCOs and officers are your enemies Always help some one that needs help Keep a sense of humor Sexism and racism is a strict no no in mil. The person you might be denigrating one day could save your ass the next. tedheath |

| 453161 | 2007-09-11 05:13:00 | NCO's and Officers are your enemies... right. Good luck going in with that attitude. I should expand on that, during training you should look after your mates and never dob them in to the training staff. Its not like school, teachers pets in the mil will get a horrible nickname for life and a reputation as a brown nose. tedheath |

Just completed RIT 1 and am going to complete RIT 2 & 3 end of this year and am just worried since I absolutely do not know how to swim. Not that I'm aware of and it is not a requirement of the RFL. The full 12-week plan of ther AARC is here: www.army.mil.nz and it doesn't mention swimming. BUT learn to swim. You won't regret it. [Edit]It's coming back to me now - this picture reminded me: www.army.mil.nz Learn to swim. |

I imagine that you can't be in the NZ army without being able to do river crossings. Get swept away, and if you can't swim, you die... |
