452637 2006-05-06 10:59:00 The Altezza or the Mazda SP20's would be my only picks.

Go to any PaperPlus store and buy a $20 copy of "The Dog & Lemon Guide" before you decide. It's quite candid and accurate.

Thanks GF. I really liked the Altezza, but it lost points on the fact that it's a bit of a boy racer car, hasn't got much of a boot (including fixed reaer seats - no split and fold), and it's at the high-end of my budget. The SP20s had firm suspension, but didn't seem to handle all that well, at least not compared with the Altezza. Thanks for the advice about the D&L Guide. I'll check it out tommorow.

452638 2006-05-06 11:01:00 Nah. The Falcon is an old man's car. It's balls had withered away long ago... vinref (6194)
452639 2006-05-06 11:02:00 Ever driven a fairmont made in the last ten years?

From my point of view it kills the 2004 Skyline GT-R we have, a car I can barely fit it, Ladies car.

Yep. The latest ones - at least in the last 3 years - are good. But all the X Falcons, and everything up to the EDs, are nowhere near the standard of the Japs of the same vintage. Suspension, gearbox, engine and general quality of the XF (~'95) are quite poor. I convinced the old man to get rid of his and get a Camry. The Camry never broke down for some strange reson.

Haven't got a proper license yet! And the prices they are asking here is ridiculous. Now I'm thinking of a dual sport motorcycle. Cheaper, more powerful, and there's some bush around Brisbane I want to take it

452643 2006-05-06 16:31:00 Personal views..
Ignore Mitsubishi's and Mazda/Fords (had some, hated them)
Go talk to Tradesmen regarding your choice of car, forget magazines, go to a pub where the mechanics go, and ask them.
Nissans have (in general) been good cars, as have Toyotas.
Euros, incl BMW, VW etc are somewhat overrated and as mentioned before maintaining the vehicle may be a bit prohibitive later in its life (who wants to wait 6 weeks for a windscreen anyway).
Leave Diesels alone, try to avoid Autos if you can.
If you live in Auckland forget a car, get a Bicycle or scooter.
If you live in the Mainland get a Sport/Tourer eg ZZR1100 and enjoy the trip to work (just watch out for tourists on the road tho)

452644 2006-05-06 21:02:00 1999 Mazda Capella S/W, 2.5L V6, 76,000 KMS, 16" factory mags, auto, ABS, airbags, $13,995

I hate Mazdas, the capellas like you have here go like stink but handle like a piece of crap

2000 Mazda Familia SP20 Hatch, 2.0L, 63,000 KMS, 16" factory mags, auto, ABS, airbags, $14,995

Another Mazda

2002 Mitsubishi Galant GLS S/W, 2.0L, tiptronic, 86,214 KMs, ABS, airbags, $13,990

Would be a good option if it is NZ new

1998 Nissan Bluebird SSS CVT M6, 2.0L, 67,772 KMS, tiptronic, sunroof, ABS, airbags, $10,990

Dont touch it, this is an early version of the CVT and they had a tendancy in some cases to implode and cost 4-5,000 to repair

2001 Mazda Familia SP20 Hatch, 2.0L, tiptronic, ABS, airbags, 59636 KMS, $16,990

Another Mazda(tiptronic = normal auto gearbox with extra "gates" = load of crap)

2000 Mazda Familia SP20 Hatch, 2.0L, 16" factory alloys, 89,718 KMS, tiptronic, ABS, airbags, $13,990

Ditto

1999 Toyota Altezza AS200, 2.0L BEAMS engine, ABS, airbags, auto, 15" factory alloys, $15,990

BUY ME
2002 Peugot 307, 2.0L, auto, 16" factory alloys, 90,487 KMS, $15,990.

Nice cars but buy the Toyota

I've driven most of them, and have my own ideas, but would be interested in any experiences you may have had with these models, or similar models. Or if you have alternatives to suggest along similar lines.

Cheers

452645 2006-05-06 21:02:00 While you get what you pay for, it is hard with secondhand cars. Newer and lower kms might have been thrashed or simply not a good model. I'm biased towards Toyota but Peugeot make good cars too. Echo GF's "Dog and Lemon guide" too. I'll have a look and see if Consumer have anything helpful.
Yep, regardless of how 2nd hand it is. I bought yet another 2nd hand Toyota. Passed its warrant....
My friend went to a dealer and paid $7000. Not long after the can belt went. Then she found it had killed the motor, then the transmission went.
Another $6000 later....

I have a rule - if the repair costs more than you paid for the car, throw it away and buy another one.

452646 2006-05-06 21:04:00 Lizard, put the model of the car in question into Google and read 'user reviews'.
There is nothing quite like hearing what owners of the cars have to say!
