| 451655 | 2006-05-03 07:49:00 | Interesting news. I don't know I support the government interfering with how a company operates, but as NZ seems to be heading down the unbundling track now it will be interesting to see how things turn out. Great, this'll make for better broadband for high income population dense suburbs and probably no change anywhere else. Geez louise have you guys not been screaming for this to happen for months! now that progress is finally being made and the dark lord Telecom is being forced into opening up its all doom and gloom. Get over it and be happy that progress is being made. |

The fact it is being unbundled will most likely be a good thing for consumers provided it is thought through and done well, so no doom and gloom here from the consumers' perspective. However, I can understand why Telecom doesn't like the idea, my comment simple took that into account. :) | maccrazy (6741) | ||

Such as unaffordable rural landlines, no free local calls (or free internet dial-up access) . . . While I am all for the benefits of LLU, I belive a significant percentage of the poplulation could be worse off . If there remains $1 to be made, someone will still make that $1 . Just because it's not Telecom getting the $1 makes little difference to the fact you will still be the one paying it, probably then a $1 . 50 due to the added infrastructure costs . Has the electricity industry improved since it was forcibly split? Noticed the cheaper price of power yet? |

| 451660 | 2006-05-03 09:30:00 | It's step, a first step . The devil, however, will be in the detail . The idea is that it creates a more level playing field, opens up opportunities for others . If the fine print or holes don't allow this it could conceivably be worse, I'd sincerely hope not, but the same muppets that have been running the show are still the same muppets afterwards and Telecom will still be trying to make the best $ they can, as pointed out above . Overall, very good news though . |

| 451661 | 2006-05-03 09:35:00 | Ninja posted the reality on another thread: None of the ISP's in New Zealand, I don't even think TelstraClear would or could blanket the country with ADSL if there was to be LLU. They'd service the high density populated middle-upper class exchanges, and then slowly move out as the equipment eventually returned on investment. But I highly doubt they'd be putting DSLAMs in Ruatoria or other small towns for a long time yet - look at Telstra Cable in Wellington - they haven't even managed to cover the whole city and they are nowhere near recouping the cost, not even the wireless providers can do it and the infrastructure cost there is exponentially lower. There's a lot of bravado about this issue from vocal ISPs, but I highly doubt any ISP having the cash or inclination to stitch up a network that has even 80% coverage of NZ. A lot of the marketers touting LLU LLU!! and even more so the consumer level people (think posters from here) who just voice that LLU is the only way to go and it'll invoke huge competition don't understand all the issues - it's not going to be a bread price war again. It also pays to think about the capacity of the Southern Cross Cable - if that entire fibre loom was lit, it's only 480Gbps - that's 245,000 2Mb connections, or if iHug had their way with ASDL2+ 20,400 24Mb ADSL 2+ connections (of course all running full speed) before the SCC is maxed out. |

| 451662 | 2006-05-03 09:40:00 | Has the electricity industry improved since it was forcibly split? Noticed the cheaper price of power yet? Such cynicism. Quelle horreur. :horrified Do you mean to imply that the splitting of the lines from generators hasn't been a success?? |

Sucker . Whos us guys? Some people have . Not all of us at all . Now we'll see the results, don't say I didn't tell you so . Bets on nothing much happening for ages and nothing especially great either . You think Telecom is the dark lord, just wait . We'll see all those mouths like Ms Slingshot do stuff all but rake in her money . |

| 451664 | 2006-05-03 10:02:00 | Great news Sure there will be problems, but every country in the OECD has unbundled except NZ and Mexico and NZ and Mexico have the slowest broadband speeds and the lowest broadband uptake ! So there must be a correlation. Also The owner of Mexico's telecom is the 4th richest guy in the world and NZ Telecom sends about $ 1 billion NZD overseas each year in profits and yet only invests about one tenth of that ! Lets wait to see Theresa spin her way out of this one, have you noticed how many direct lies she tells when interviewed lately. How can she and her fellow top executives sleep at night ?
