698278 2008-08-18 02:54:00 I want to instal cd writer in place of cd rom.
The cd rom drive was fitted but not connected because the cable is too short. I could go around and abuse the bugger who sold it to me or I sort out the problem. Techincaly I suppose he is in the clear because it has cd rom fitted never said anything about it being connected!
Can I turn the cable around to make it reach I notice a red line on the outside of it.
Or can I buy an extenstion cable with male/female plugs.
Also very confused with slave markings on cd writer drive I am going to fit
The jumper has 6 pins and a yellow thing across the middle set top to bottom.
The engraving above has the letters CSM and SLA above the pins which pins should I use.
At the moment the the drive which works on my computer is dvd rom drive and I want to fit the cd writer above it should i put the cd writer to slave? and what set of pins make it slave
Thanks in advance for any help I can get.

698279 2008-08-18 02:59:00 No you cant buy extension cables for IDE devices

The red line MUST go to pin 1 on the cd/dvd and pin 1 on the motherboard

If it still doesnt fit, you'll have to buy another cable

CS = Cable select M =Master SLA = Slave

If you want it as slave, put the jumper on the 2 pins under SLA

Just make sure the DVD is on Master, or you'll have probs

You might as well put a DVD burner in theyre cheap, and remove that DVD and the CD writer

The computer is desktop model I suppose if it was up the other way the drives would be able to connect up because the drives would be above each other instead of being sideways if that makes sense
Is it possible to buy a cable with the joining plug a greater distance from the drive plug.

698281 2008-08-18 06:03:00 You need an IDE cable and they come in various lengths as well as various distances betweeen the three plugs.

You may be able to move a drive higher or lower in the case to achieve what you want.

Notice the red stripe on the cable which should connect to pin 1 on the motherboard and pin 1 on the IDE drive. Pin 1 on the IDE drive is normally closest to the power connector and I have never seen a drive that wasn't.

Also check to see if you need 40 or 80 wire cable. Older hard drives use 40 and more modern use 80.

698282 2008-08-18 07:04:00 Got one of these (www.pbtech.co.nz) a while back, should be long enough (reached from the bottom edge of the motherboard to the Dvd burner at the top of a full ATX tower case easily,). feersumendjinn (64)
698283 2008-08-18 08:23:00 Some IDE cables can be very short - if you have a brand name PC (compaq, dell, etc) they often make the cables just long enough to reach the drives they put in themselves and no more. So upgrades can be difficuilt.

If you can't connect 2 drives to 1 cable something is wrong. Probably you just need to buy another cable

Jumpers will go across the top like this (labelling and jumpers):

CSM
SLA
: : :

First pair is Cable Select, second and Slave and third is Master. Jumper must always be installed vertically or damage to drive will result

Thanks for reply Sweep but I cant shift them like a tower case, this case is on its side and the 2 drives are as close as I can get them.
I will as per go to dse and get the cable on your link thanks

Thanks to your diagram I have worked the jumper out thanks I kept thinking the sla was slave going from left to right confused the heck out of me.

I have 3 ide cables but they are the same length I suppose they are for tower boxes mine lies flat and the cables are about 2 inches short.
If the cable was allowed to be reversed they would fit but told the red line has to go towards the power cable on the drive.
Thanks for help
