698060 2008-08-17 10:42:00 I have a Pentium 4 1.6GB computer and had an ethernet port/PCI card installed into it yesterday so that I could get Broadband, I also have a D-Link DSL-504T modem. Since I have had the PCI card installed I have been having intermittent computer problems. I used to have a power option set to switch off my monitor after 20 mins of non-use and to wake it back up I used to just hit a key or move the mouse. A couple of times today it just wouldn't respond and I've had to reset/switch-off/on the computer to get my monitor back. I also had a few problems with games freezing when running from the DVD-drive and they were just games my kids were playing (Dora The Explorer!!) so weren't high graphic games or anything. MY PC has also frozen a couple of times as has the mouse and a couple of times I'vd had the blue screen of death and the message that the system has recovered from a serious error.

Could these problems be caused by the PCI card or the modem and why would they be intermittent?

Any help would be appreciated :)

Thanks in advance.

698061 2008-08-17 11:36:00 How old is the Motherboard ??

If the board is to old, and if it didn't have a built in Ethernet port it may just not be able to handle it.

Click Start/run type in eventvwr look through the system and application logs, look to see what the error was, it should be listed, then please copy/paste the whole error message here.

698062 2008-08-17 12:02:00 Could be a bad driver for the new network card. Do you know what brand/model it is? Agent_24 (57)
698063 2008-08-17 22:42:00 Could try swapping the card to another slot, you may have IRQ conflicts! SolMiester (139)
698064 2008-08-18 03:36:00 Or as the best basic test just pull the card out completely and then see if the PC operates normally. If it does then you know there's some problem with the card. or how it's setup

Also you said you had some bluescreens. can you post what these were? If you can't remember you can check in event viewer.

For windows XP right click on "my computer" and choose "manage"

Open the event viewer folder on the left hand side and then open the system log

Look for the "error" entries with the red circle and white cross icon.

You can easily copy all error info from an entry by double-clicking it, and then clicking the little button on the righthand side with the 2 pages on it. Then you can paste the info into the forum

The board is about 6 years old and did not have an ethernet port.

I'll run the eventvwr when I get home and post the results here,

Thanks.

The card was a Belkin Gigabit Desktop PCI card

6 years old doesn't mean anything, and that long ago there were a lot of boards that didn't have ethernet ports. You'd often have to buy a more expensive model to get it. Nowadays almost everything has ethernet.

I've run PCI network cards in motherboards a lot older than that (Pentium 1 spec) and no problems. If anything you may need a BIOS update but unlikely.

698069 2008-08-18 09:04:00 I've run eventvwr and these are the errors, some of them are unconnected I suspect but I have copied all the ones on the dates since the ethernet port was installed .

Thanks for your help everyone, it is much appreciated:
