697903 2008-08-17 05:27:00 Hi, I have a PCI tv tuner that is obviously not HD.

What are available today if I should get a new computer next year? Is HD available yet for the computer? I assume I would need a compatible screen? It is to be used for computing most of the time with the odd HD tv show / record etc.

Thanks.

697904 2008-08-17 05:55:00 You just need a DVB-T tuner, and the appropriate software to decode the HD stream. For example, I'm using a $30 USB tv tuner I bought while at a conference overseas, and DVBViewer software to decode the Freeview HD signal. The downside of this is that the decoding is done by the CPU, which is obviously a very resource-intensive process.

I believe there are now tuners which will do the decoding on the card themselves, which will significantly reduce load on your CPU. These cards are more expensive however.

697905 2008-08-17 06:18:00 You could either get a PCI or USB tuner .

And some mobos now support HD onboard . They have normal VGA, DVI and HDMI onboard . all you need is the screen and software

Are computer LCDs with HD these days?

Depends on what you mean. LCDs which have sufficient pixels will be "HD". Even if it isn't, the resolution you get on a normal LCD will be much higher than you would get on an analogue TV.
