697840 2008-08-17 02:13:00 hi

a large proportion of my computers hard drive seems to be taken up by itunes and its stored files ( i dont have a very modern machine with only 40G of HD).

Is it possible to plug in a usb hard drive and keep my itunes on this separate to the actual machine ? if so any pointers how to make this happen.

This also acts as a very good back up should my aging pc give up so i don''t lose all my music that took days to transfer to the pc.

thanks

697841 2008-08-17 02:50:00 Yes it is, just set the location of your iTunes library in iTunes>preferences>general>advanced>library location>browse>set. The only thing you will have to watch for is that iTunes may have a few issues finding your library when ever you restart your PC as it doesn't seem to like having the library locatated on an external drive. snafu (14042)
697842 2008-08-17 03:37:00 I have a couple of customers with the same problem - What we found is if you have the Storage device plugged into the PC when its turned on, then open Itunes, it finds the music OK, if you don't then there can be problems locating it.

One customer has a NAS device that if its turned off, and the PC is turned on then itunes throws a wobbly.
You can navigate to the drive and play songs by double clicking, but not through the Itunes menu.

697843 2008-08-17 04:14:00 The easiest way to do it would just be to move to a bigger hard drive since they are cheap enough. snafu (14042)

i had thought of that but i reckon the whole machine is slowly giving up the ghost and I am really not that keen on losing all my tunes, so i figured it's either an external HD or a new machine.

If i replace the HD and the machine died does that mean I could just take it out and copy to the new machine ?

cheers

697845 2008-08-17 07:01:00 Yes you should be able to slave it and copy the music over, not sure whether itunes will let you as don't use it, I use normal mp3's for that reason as I can do what I want with them gary67 (56)
697846 2008-08-17 07:48:00 Yes you can copy iTunes (library and song ratings data etc) over from one drive to another by various means with no issues. The only restrictions come when you want to copy/share music purchased from the iTunes Store that is DRMd and in this case I think the limit is around 3? other computers. The restrictions (as pointless as they are) are are imposed by the music industry and not as many people would say - by Apple.

As long as the music in your iTunes collection comes from MP3 files or is music ripped from a CD collection to AAC or what ever codec you can pretty much do what you want with it (RIAA looks on in shock and horror at that suggestion ;) )
