697805 2008-08-17 01:25:00 I've got an instructional DVD that is wonky - clatters in the disk drive and doesn't play smoothly. It's copy protected, with the usual warnings, and produced in Australia.

It was my impression that NZ law allowed you to make a single copy of a disk you legally own for backup purposes. Is this correct?

I bought it through my teacher, she's ancient, and I don't want to go to the hassle of trying to return it through her

697806 2008-08-17 01:28:00 I dont think anyone cares what the laws are.

People will still copy what they want, whether they've brought it, or downloaded it.

697808 2008-08-17 02:08:00 Well, yes, I did decide I was morally entitled to copy it anyway. Just wondered about the actual legalities. annie (6010)
697809 2008-08-17 02:30:00 You can look up the details of the "Copyright (New Technologies) Amendment Act" which will come into force in Oct. There's never been a right to backup, soon you will be able to format shift music to suit the various portable players that you have but Video hasn't changed. PaulD (232)
697810 2008-08-17 02:44:00 Thanks for that, it's clear enough that you can't back up.

On an aside though, this is a bit bizarre, given that repeat broadcasts of a programme are often unlikely:

"The Act also clarifies the rights of individuals to make personal copies of television broadcasts for the purpose of viewing the show later by specifically excluding the right to record and copy from an on-demand service. All permitted copies (i.e. proper time-shifting from a broadcast) must be strictly for personal use and not kept beyond the period reasonably necessary to watch the show (i.e. cannot be viewed multiple times on demand)."

697811 2008-08-17 02:53:00 hey its bloody ridiculous but like speedy and others say.......who cares ?

personally I usually make iso versions of cd/dvd's then I mount em in my 'magic' disk virtual drive when required ......very easy and handy

697812 2008-08-17 03:06:00 I care, in the sense that the government's idiotic intrusive lawmaking is unreasonably making criminals out of people.

For instance, does this mean that the Buffy and BSG tapes have to be ditched if I want to comply with the law? (Rhetorical question).
