455151 2006-05-16 02:00:00 Hi C. Don't fret. I can recall similar several times in the nearly fifty years that I have lived here. On one occasion it even caused the creation of a several good cartoons on the national dailies. Scouse (83)
455152 2006-05-16 02:11:00 Last one out, switch off the lights :D

Thats what my family say to me when i go and visit them in Oz. They slowly, one by one, all moved over there a few years ago and whenever i go over they ask if i switched off the lights. So far i've left it on so i can find my way home but i often ask myself when sitting on a white sandy beach in my shorts and singlet in the middle of june sipping a xxxx why do i want to go home to NZ.

'Fraid so Cic.

Elementary really, just a question of relative natural resources; eg from this impeccable source:
www.cia.gov

Australia: bauxite, coal, iron ore, copper, tin, gold, silver, uranium, nickel, tungsten, mineral sands, lead, zinc, diamonds, natural gas, petroleum

New Zealand: natural gas, iron ore, sand, coal, timber, hydropower, gold, limestone

We don't AFAIK have iron ore, it's in the form of iron sands, I don't suppose we get any benefit either from gold extraction, all the mining firms are foreign/Australian owned.

So playing around with taxes wont make much of a difference, that's just politicking.

We don't have China beating a path to our door to buy our limestone :)
