454629 2006-05-13 11:49:00 I haven't ever put a ringtone into a phone but thought I'd give it a try with my new Nokia 6255. I've got the Nokia software on the PC.

Anyway, I found a webite in the UK a couple of weeks ago which had about 30 birdsongs. But didn't bookmark it. :help:

I googled for ages but simply cannot find it anywhere so just wondered if anybody had such a ringtone or knew of a site. Indeed any suggestions for other unusual or novel types of ringtones would be welcome.

454632 2006-05-14 21:58:00 Try these Winston:

www.nzbirds.com

www.kiwi-wildlife.co.nz

www.altavista.com

These are not ring tones, but audio files. I create my own mp3 files then download them into my cellphone - not too difficult, and it is free.

454633 2006-05-15 01:01:00 Thanks very much everyone. Don't know why I bother with Google - should just come straight here.

Rutherford - are the MP3 sounds loud enough to function as a ring? Good suggestion. Do I need to convert them to midi or polyphonic for a Nokia 6255? It certainly plays mp3.

454634 2006-05-15 02:26:00 And, I would like to do it too - how do you load the MP3 onto your mobile (you're talking to a mobile-illiterate here)

454636 2006-05-15 10:05:00 Winston, Sarel - Bird songs cannot be in MIDI files since those are basically single tones as on a keyboard . I am not familiar with your Nokia so you will have to look in the User Guide that came with the phone or search for a PDF User Guide via Google . However I would guess that the Nokia would use MP3s, and you can find this via your phone's Menu / Sounds or Profiles or whatever .

OK, once you have confirmed that MP3s can be used for ringtones, and if you have downloaded a bird song, you will have to transfer it to your phone, using a cable, bluetooth, or infrared . These are extras for most phones so if you don't want to spend $$ then forget the ringtone thing .

Winston, you ask if it will be loud enough . First you have to choose a bird song that is sharp and clear . Then if it is not loud enough you will have to use a sound editor to normalize or otherwise increase the amplitude . I have done this with classical piano music with excellent results, although a professional pianist would not be pleased to hear the finished result . On second thought, they probably would be pleased to hear decent music for a ringtone even if it is normalized beyond the original waveforms .

Good luck . This has interested me so I will try it on my phone, using the Little Spotted Kiwi and Giant Forest Honeyeater .

454637 2006-05-15 23:59:00 Thanks very much Rutherford. I have an editing program so can do what you suggest.

The idea came from a nephew who seems to have a tui inside his phone. Nice and loud and quite startling when it whistles. I should ask him where he got it from.

454638 2006-05-16 01:10:00 Hi Winston,
I have some NZ bird songs on my pc that you maybe interested in? .
I have Bellbirds, Kakako, Takahe, Tui, Kiwi, Morepork & Saddleback . Theres about 3 or 4 different songs by the Tui, Bellbird and Kakako .

I can't remember where i got them from . Might of been off a website or off a disc .
Theyre all in mp3 format .

I'm going to put them on my website when i get around to it for anyone to download but that wont be for a while as i'm off to Oz for a month . PM me within the next two days if your interested in any of them before then .

If you find one you like whether one of mine or someone elses, you could do what i do (for pictures anyway cause my phone isn't pix capable . )
I'm with vodaphone and are registered on their website . From there i can view photos sent to me from other pix phones or upload from my computer and then send to any phone i want . You can send pix, video & sound files (if the receprients phone can recieve it) . You could send the bird song from your computer to your phone if you dont have anyway of connecting your phone to your computer .

Just a thought, Cheers .
