| 698111 | 2008-08-24 11:58:00 | I have a feeling your hdd is knackered. I would buy another hdd. The hdd has data corruption Did you run chkdisk before for this? The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:. Not always, faulty RAM can also cause files to become corrupted. Run Memtest (www.memtest.org) and then if that's fine, a hard drive diagnostic tool (seagate has seatools, if you have a different drive you can find a suitable program on the manufacturer's website) back up important data first!! |

I have run chkdsk a couple of times and there are no problems found, I hope its not the hdd, its only a couple of years old :( I've got everything backed up just in case. I may go down the repair/reformat route and see if that helps. And if that fails Imay have to invest in a new hdd I guess. |

I don't think askbar is still installed, is that the search that sits on the taskbar? I'll have another look when I get home tonight. Yes the icons on the desktop and the taskbar disappear for a few seconds each time explorer crashes. But any utility that is open stays so if I am using Firefox, for example, when the crash happens, I can carry on surfing whilst the taskbar and desktop icons disappear. |

All data is backed up, I'm normally pretty good at backing stuff up :) Thanks, I'll run memtest and the hard drive diagnostic this evening. |

| 698116 | 2008-08-25 09:48:00 | Just run Seagate's SeaTools for windows, two tests failed - The Long DST (Drive Self test) and the Long Generic Test, all the others passed. Does this mean the HDD is failing/failed? For Memtest - what do I need to download/run? |

Does this mean the HDD is failing/failed? For Memtest - what do I need to download/run? Sounds like you may indeed have a faulty drive. But some problems can also be caused by faulty or loose drive cabling, so it may pay to check that also. I would personally re-run the test after verifying the cables but do it with the bootable DOS version. you can run it off either floppy disk or CD. running in windows could cause false errors. SMART may provide some additional info too. Install Speedfan and see what the hard drive check tool says.. For memtest, go here: memtest.org I personally use this memtest.org but if you don't have a floppy drive or discs you can download an CD ISO to burn or even one that you can run off a USB drive (if your PC supports booting from USB) |
