453767 2006-05-15 05:54:00 The difference would be noted as there mates will say to them 'I hope you're keeping your updates, up to date, not to mention your antivirus, anti spyware, firewall, (has that covered it or did I miss one :p)... '
jcr1; you'll be in some trouble when they go looking for and discover you haven't installed those staples of the windows world

Not guilty your honour, I do install 'em  Trouble is they're on dial up on not particularly good rural lines and keeping updates up to date is a right pain :waughh: Then hey, ho, somewhere down the track, there's some fixin' to do (but I actually enjoy it  ). Anyway I thought that wouldn't a good stable linux setup do the job for them (also an interesting experiment from my point of view). Because really, unless you look after windows it's performance soon goes down and one is faced with a registry tidy up, defrag, clean out unused stuff etc. etc.. As for their mates, well they care as much for computers as they do (until things go wrong, then its :help:).

453769 2006-05-15 10:47:00 Linux is cool just so long as you have hours and hours of time to mess round with command lines and documentation and obscure settings. The moment you actually want to do something, you need Windows.

Like setting up a wireless network. I bought a USB WiFi dongle recently. On XP, you stick in the included CD, plug in the dongle, and in the window that pops up you click 'sure, install the driver automatically, thanks mate'. In Linux you mess round for seriously ages (probably over 10 hours already...) trawling websites for information on downloading Linux headers and kernel source, the driver source, wpa supplicant source, the gcc compiler and a whole host of other updates, before eventually attempting to recompile the kernel or modules or something to incorporate the new driver.

And it still doesn't work.

If you think you can make it work, feel free to contribute to this thread... (forums.pcworld.co.nz)

Bashing one's head into Linuxcrete walls is painful.

Bashing one's head into Linuxcrete walls is painful.Hey.. I went through a bit of a challenge trying to make sound work in my simply awful flaptop with FC3, the end result, was to do it the easy way, and the easy way for me was to try a different distro, hence me now running everything with Mepis. There are plenty of distros where WIFI is fully suppported with little or no setup required.

Bashing one's head into Linuxcrete walls is painful. One thing I really dislike is one distro user having issues with his distro and making it a generalised Linux issue. Not all Linux distros are the same. Comparing Ubuntu to say Gentoo is like comparing ME to XP.
Another thing, not all hardware is linux compatible. For some hardware suppliers its about money, and good ol Billy boy can help them line their pockets. Linux being open source is therefore a less attractive option (money-wise)

/me puts in another vote for portage

Like setting up a wireless network . I bought a USB WiFi dongle recently . On XP, you stick in the included CD, plug in the dongle, and in the window that pops up you click 'sure, install the driver automatically, thanks mate' . So . . . you purchased a wireless nic that said MS Windows on the side of the box, and came with a nice windows CD with windows drivers on it .

Imagine if the situation was reversed, you purchased a NIC that came with only (insert linux distro name here) support . . I bet it would just be a case of "run the CD" too . But where would you go, or what would you do without windows drivers supplied by the manufacturer? Would this be the fault of Microsoft or Windows? no . . just the card's manufacturer for not supplying drivers .

It just takes a little more care when purchasing hardware to make sure that it will work with your distribution .

How can you insult Ubuntu like that? I would say that Ubuntu is like XP (easy to use, looks good, minimal setup required) & there is no windows equivilent to Gentoo.
