697788 2008-08-17 00:12:00 Overnight (Saturday night) my AVG Free (version 8) updated itself, and appears to have corrupted the updater. Now looking at the Update Manager it says "A .bin file is missing"

I just wanted to let PressF1 readers know here this is a known issue and AVG is looking into it.

I quote AVG "The updates that your AVG currently have will still provide the protection it is setup to detect. In otherwords, just getting this update will not make your AVG Free ineffective and as soon as AVG Tech resolves the issue you will be able to update to the current virus definitions at that time. ".

697790 2008-08-17 00:26:00 Not to surprising really - AVG is going backwards fast, ever since version 8.

There is better free antivirus software - Avast for example.

Good for the warning to others though.

697791 2008-08-17 00:27:00 Thanks for that
I seem to have fixed mine by doing a manual update.

I tried avast and thought it was a pig. I couldn't make sense of any of the settings. I just want somethign that'll scan once a day and kill virus. I'm not interested in all the other guff they put in them these days :(

697794 2008-08-17 03:25:00 Avast is by far the best and has really good real-time scanners. Give it another go, AVG is hopeless.

KiwiTek: If you dont get the settings, just ask.

697795 2008-08-17 03:52:00 Just with my personal experience, use something else. I used AVG and it was more of a hassle then anything else. I changed to avast. Working fine. I have read many articles on the AVG 8.0 and it causes allot of problems. Wainuitech said it best. Good Luck. puffins808 (14043)
697796 2008-08-17 04:26:00 Currently the update for AVG Free v8 is corrupted . . . you will have to wait for AVG Technologies to address the issue with the update .

Reporting the issue again by other users here will not do any good util it is resolved .

The updates that your AVG currently have will still provide the protection it is setup to detect . In otherwords, not being able to get this update will not make your AVG Free ineffective and as soon as AVG Tech resolves the issue you will be able to update to the current virus definitions at that time .

So in short . . . please do not post to report the issue, its already known . Also please be patient until AVG Technologies can address the issue .

Also . . . for those user that did report the issue . . . thanks for the info .

From the AVG forum .
It always pays to check a products forum .

697797 2008-08-17 04:37:00 Had avg went to avast on 3 comps here and would never go back Avast is way better scans in real time no having to set scheds for scans, updates flawlessly every time does not intrude ever and the settings are by far the easiest of the two free anti virus programs and if you do decide to do a manual scan it's quicker than AVG as well gary67 (56)
