454252 2006-05-12 01:50:00 Why doesn't NZ start purchasing our fuel from Venezuela, Would be alot cheaper. I also think that they would be alot more willing to sell it to us than the US.

454253 2006-05-12 02:05:00 Because if you have read the article in the link that you posted, you would also see that it clearly states the internal price in Venezuela is subsidised by President Hugo Chavez for the benefit of the residents of that country. Not other countries.

Exported fuel will all be at the international rate, so there would be no benefit to us.

454254 2006-05-12 02:36:00 The Export Rate is controlled by the Sellers hich is where the problems are, Basic Economics doesnt apply to the big players, Its not a buyers market. All the big oil companies work together to make as much profit as possible, its not like there is any real competition other wise you would see one company drop their price by 2 cents per litre and they would get 99.9% of the customers and would make up the difference with sheer volume of sales, rather than margins. but instead they all put their prices up and just keep increasing their profit margins,

Good if you invest in them, bad if your the other 99.99% of the world

Oil is about the most perfect economic market. There are thousands of companies involved from drilling, extraction, tankers, refineries, more tankers, storage, delivery, and ultimately petrol stations selling to the end consumer. And then there is the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC (en.wikipedia.org) ) which represents about 2/3rds of the worlds production.

The big oil companies certainly loom large but they are far from being a monopoly. In the United States there are strong independant companies which operate in various states in open competition with Texaco et al.

If it was really so simple as dropping the price 2 cents, don't you think one company would do it?

I read the other day that petrol sales have dropped (only) 4% since the price jumped to $1.70/litre for 91.

The great thing about the oil market is that people have to buy it. Industry relies on it as an energy source.

What I find interesting is that people haven't changed their driving style as petrol has gone up (well from my limited observations). They still drive at 110kph on the motorway and a heavy right foot... well I haven't noticed people driving smoother.

How about we know where there is a massive new oilfield in [insert obscure underdeveloped country here] and we are the only country that knows that it has reserves greater than the rest of the world combined . All we need to develop this resource to our mutual benefit is a substantial figure (say, NZ$50 billion) for investment in the infrastructure needed to refine, store and transport this very high-grade of oil which is virtually ready for use by cars, trucks, jumbo jets and military strike aircraft just as it comes out of the ground .

Apart from the money, the only other assistance we will need them to provide is to set up regular shipments of their refined petroleum product (in regular automotive grade, nothing fancy) so that we can have the cover of an established and ongoing shipment regime of oil tankers to and from NZ so that we may better conceal our activites in said OUC .

We will, of course, also pay substantial retainers to those good servants of Venezuela who facilitate the transfer of these preliminary funds to our Swiss Bank Account (chosen of course for their absolute discretion) but as an act of good faith we will provide the last 15 digits of said account number in a sealed envelope and will put up the deeds to Telecom as additional security .

About all we need to cement the deal is some documentation on Parliamentary Letterhead (we'll ask Don Brash for that, he's dopey enough to give it to us) and we'll be away .

How does this help NZ get cheaper fuel?

Well, to be brutally francis, I'm buggered if I know, but once I get my hands on the cash I won't give a toss what petrol costs .

Cheers
