699186 2008-08-21 21:47:00 Hi there:)
I have a 320gb hard drive (used) that I would like to add as a slave drive to my desktop.
Opening the case yesterday, I noticed that the ribbon cable is currently set (from new) with CD drive at the end (Master?) and the existing 80gb drive at next plug (Slave?)
The floppie drive is also on a ribbon cable of it's own.
Does this mean that I would need to get another ribbon cable for the CD drive and then set the 80gb HD at the end connection of the existing ribbon and the new 320 gb in the middle?
Both HDs are ata 100.
Thanks for any advise.

699187 2008-08-21 22:07:00 How many IDE connections are in the case??

Some motherboards have 1, some have 2.

If theres 2 put it on the 2nd IDE connection. Altho, I would put both hard drives on Primary Master / Slave, (if the 80 GB is the boot disk / has windows on it), and the CD by itself (on the secondary IDE connection).

If theres only 1 IDE connection, you cant put 3 on the same connection.

You'll have to remove the 80 GB or cd, and put the 320 GB hdd in

And you cant connect a hdd to the floppy connection

699188 2008-08-21 22:07:00 You should really have the hard drive and CD drive on separate cables, as the two will run at the speed of the slowest one (the CD drive).

There should be another port on the motherboard (next to the one you're using). Plug the CD drive into the unused one via the existing cable, and use another IDE (ribbon) cable into the two hard drives.

The 80gb one should already be set to 'master', but set the new 320GB one to be slave by changing the jumpers at the back, next to the IDE connection.

The position of the two drives on the one cable is irrelevant - it doesn't matter. :)

Remember you'll have to format the 320GB drive before you can use it - Right Click My Computer>Manage>Disk Mgmt>Right-click new drive, Format then follow instructions.

699189 2008-08-21 22:16:00 Thank you both very much.
Am using the pc at the moment but will check the connections this evening.
I was a bit surprised when I saw cd drive and hard drive on the same cable so thought it always helps to ask the experts :)

The problem is that each cable (IDE controller) can only talk to one of the devices at a time rather than device speed as modern motherboards set speed of master & slave independently.
