699191 2008-08-21 21:26:00 Ni hau!

Our receptionist at work has bought a second hand PC.
She bought it from a young Chinese person.
The PC is set up for the Chinese language.
Our receptionist is not.

Do you see the problem?

The PC is running XP. It should of course be an easy job to change the language setting but of course she can't follow the steps because it's all in Chinese.

Is it a straight-forward task to change a language anyway? I imagine that even if she can figure out which buttons to press (assuming the Chinese will just emulate XP on another PC so she can copy the steps), will she need the original XP disk to complete the change?

Xie xie!

699192 2008-08-21 21:33:00 I think she'll / you'll have to buy it.

If it was an English version, on the other hand, you may have been able to install a LIP (Lanaguage Interface pack)

A LIP changes everything in Windows, to another language

699193 2008-08-21 21:44:00 That could be exciting :D The LIP Speedy suggested Available here ( . microsoft . com/downloads/details . aspx?FamilyID=0db2e8f9-79c4-4625-a07a-0cc1b341be7c&displaylang=en" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com) may work, but it may also give problems, according to MS's site its not available in English
This English page is for reference only, Language Interface Packs (LIP) for Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition is not available in English, but provides a localized User Interface for emerging or minority language markets . Heres what it does:
Overview
Microsoft Windows XP Language Interface Pack (LIP) is a high-quality, localized "skin" for emerging or minority language markets, such as Catalan, Lithuanian, and Thai - it is not available in English . Based on MUI technology, LIP provides the desktop user with an approximately 80% localized user experience by translating a reduced set of user interface elements . LIP is installed on a licensed copy of Windows and a fixed base language, e . g . English is a fixed base language . You may be better off wiping the drive and reinstall Windows using the product key & CD that you should have gotten with the PC .

This would also remove any data/programs/junk that the previous owner left .

699194 2008-08-21 22:16:00 Is the Chinese Seller still around? Between the three of you it should be possible to solve the language of the computer. PJ Poppa John (284)
699195 2008-08-21 23:14:00 It’s character building stuff this . :D

I can’t help you with Chinese, but I did convert a laptop from German to English .

I was lucky as the owner was with me, but the German Keyboard caused me misery . :badpc:

I’m with the others and would recommend a format and fresh install but I was stuck with him wanting to retain what was on the laptop . :(

Very droll!
