699102 2008-08-21 02:25:00 my friend has a new modem from Telecom, a Thomson ST536
and just got a Dynalink DYWRT54 Wirelss Router and Usb adapter to connect the old computer in the other room as they have just got a new computer which i am hleping them with.
Setup the Router according to instructions and it said you need to setup the modem as a bridge, now there is nothing that i can find in the settings to make it like a bridge, looks very basic.
Rang Xtra and they were not very helpful at all.
Have gone into the Router settings and changed the setting to PPOe and used the user name etc, had it on Dynamic IP and tired it on static IP but nothing seemed to work.
The IP of the modem is 192.168.1.254, the Router is 192.168.1.1.
Should i change the setting on the computer to a static IP?
i am a little confused here, tried to get through to Dynalink, went thorugh some confusing options, got into a Queue and got to no2 then they bumped me off after ages waiting.
if someone could help i would apreciate it.

699103 2008-08-21 02:38:00 not quite sure i follow what you've done but I have a similar setup I guess with different hardware heres what I did.....i have a desktop with a d-link 502t and then I bought a lappy......and a wireless accespoint.

I have the adsl modem plugged into the wireless router and the router plugged into the desktop (I ran a setup cd which I got with the router on the desktop)........turned on the lappy and hit the wireless switch on it and it found a wireless network suprise suprise lol........it was very simple........however I did make it easier by buying an asus laptop and asus wireless router

699104 2008-08-21 02:56:00 Via the instructins which look simple you connect the Modem to the Wan port on the Router. Coonnect the computer to the Router in the Lan port. Login to the Router, then go through the quick setup, choose Wan connection, use what connection type has been provided by the ISP which is PPOE?, then enter user name and password.
under that, please note if you have exsisting modem router and ISP requires a PPOE connection it is usually reccomended that you place your exsisting modem router into bridge mode (if feature is supported). this is so it will be turned into a transparent device allowing the new router to establish, maintain and share your broadband connection.

Does that make sense? that is the instructions

Then it goes on for instructions on the Dynamic IP and then the Static IP setup.
What do i choose?

699105 2008-08-21 03:01:00 It should be PPPoA

Try connecting the modem to the Lan port of the router.

699106 2008-08-21 03:05:00 PPOA, is the other one for Australia?
Can i ask how that works plugged into the Lan port? Just curious.

699107 2008-08-21 04:05:00 PPoA is also for NZ, PPoE wont work.

Try setting the router to dynamic as per page 15 of the manual and see what happens, the router is only getting the IP address from the modem and splitting it out.

Xtras default settings are:

username.xadsl@xtra.co.nz

ADSL Settings: PPoA

VPI : 0

VCI: 100

I thought that it should work like that...

699109 2008-08-22 05:24:00 That worked as far as getting the internet connection working on the Host computer, the one with the Router setup on it.
Also got the Wireless working on the other computer but it will not get an internet connection..
in the settings for the Router i set it to Dynamic like you said and plugged the modem into a Lan port.
The Router sits there clicking away trying to get?? Seems like trying to set Network parameters or something and dosn't get anything, does that make sense?
there is no option anyway for PPOa there only pPOe which we know is worng.
Dynalink were useless, i explained what i wanted and he emailed me how to setup the Wireless and that is all there is on their web site as well, i knew how to do that....
Any more help would be really apreciated, it just dosn't make sense it should work simply.

699110 2008-08-22 05:35:00 So what are you trying to do now?? Get the PC with wireless on the net??

Go into its LAN properties and point it to the router so the router knows its there, and it might hep if you put the ISP's DNS server ips in

I would also enable WPA + (anything but WEP), on it, if both the router and the wireless on this other PC support WPA or higher
