698868 2008-08-20 16:10:00 A buddy with XP-Media cannot get his AIO Brother to work as it had for a long time . He recently went from dial-up to cable, and that may have brought on the problem .

Oh, yeah . . he thinks Norton is great and it is not gonna change, nor will he . He paid for it, so it MUST be the best .

He is being denied access to the scanner side of his Brother AIO by Yahoo!'s e-mail client and it shows up as a camera in devices .

I ran AVG's scanner in Safe Mode and it cleaned a lot and a great amount of speed came back to his puter . . . a dual processor 2 . 2g Athlon/Dell w/1g RAM .

I deleted/dumped the driver(s) and downloaded new ones straight from Brother's site . . and this is just nuts . . . because it changed nothing .

I tried the installation CD again . . . nope!

I ran HJT and it found nothing bad .

I ran AVG's Rootkit Scanner . . . nope!

Picasa though, can and will scan and run the Brother just fine, but this guy is a lot more anal than I am and insists on using Yahoo! for reasons that make perfect sense to him .

Since Picasa can access and scan yet Yahoo cannot . . . I think it's a denial of service of some kind from viral or trojan activity . I think this rules out a dodgy USB cable or any form of hardware problems .

He doesn't have SP-3, as I somehow talked him out of that . . but to get him off Yahoo! is gonna take fire tongs and boiling oil .

Should I be thinking of a firmware re-burn or what?

698869 2008-08-20 20:22:00 Try removing Norton and see if it works then - if it does then it might convince him to remove it :D

And if that doesn't work, show him some of the "I hate Norton's" sites... Just a quick Google away!!

Yeah it does..he showed me the moves and clicks he normally makes and a pop-in says to this effect: "Yahoo! cannot access your scanner. Please check that the USB cable is connected correctly". :(

698872 2008-08-21 00:08:00 I doubt that a scanner can be used in any messenger program.

Tell him to get a real webcam if he wants to use a cam

His icons are probably stuffed, if its showing a cam for the scanner

And Picasa can detect / use it since its a twain device

I see that his Yahoo! E-mail has a drop down to allow the writer to goto almost any optical device for attachments . . that's where he clicks and hits Brother Flatbed Scanner and gets the error message that Yahoo! cannot "see" the device .

I looked in the devices in the manager, and it's listed as a camera, but clicking on it gets the same message that the USB is kaflooey .

You're right of course that it's a TWAIN device . . . and I understand that's a possibility to why Picasa can see it . . .

. . . . . . . . but I used the Scan Manager, Picasa's built in TWAIN and Picture It 9 and they all see the scanner and can scan and e-mail what they collect . . . but not thru Yahoo! .

.

I ran almost every {xxxx-xx-xxx} that I didn't know and some that I did...thru Google, used the Hijackthis.com.de/ site and generally was doing this whilst NZ was asleep (I'm at GMT-7)

Deleted and re-installed drivers till my fingers bled on the keys and ran every anti-device in standard boot and Safe Mode...nada! :waughh:
