2008-08-19 09:02:00 | I posted this earlier today "Everytime I go to open 2003 Word is asks me to run the Compatability Service Pack which I have downloaded and installed from Microsoft. This does not seem to be the problem and Word still won't open. I also tried to reinstall Word but still same problem. Any suggestions" Speedy you asked what service pack was loaded - it is 3 (sorry I have just got back to the computer) All the other Office 2003 programs open OK - its just Word that has an issue:banana

Click start/run in the box type in winword.exe /a Press Enter, if it opens, close it, then click start/search , in the "all files and Folders" type in normal.dot , under advanced options make sure Search system folders and search Hidden folders are selected, hit Search. When the search results find it, select and rename to normal.old ( ignore any warnings, word will remake this file) close the search and try reopening Word as per usual. If that doesn't work, but it will open in the command mode as before do that again hit Help in the tool bar up top, select detect and Repair. |

2008-08-19 21:38:00 | HI I ran the repair/install (probably about three times now) and still not working. I'll have a look at the Event Viewer when I get home and keep you updated. Have a great day. Thanks

2008-08-20 01:17:00 | Try deleting the Normal.dot file like I suggested earlier on. From another site: When you launch Word, it looks for normal.dot and opens it. If your normal.dot is corrupt, it can cause Word to crash upon launching Word Once you have deleted/renamed it word automatically recreates a new one if its not there. Also By any chance do you have Norton Antivirus installed ? if so disable it, I have seen Norton kill office products in the past

2008-09-07 23:39:00 | Hello all! I've been having this same problem for a couple of days, I seemed to have tried everything and I could just not get Word to work again. Thanks to the suggestion from wainuitech, my Word 2003 (SP3) is working great again. All I had to do was deleted these two files and Word was working great again: C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dot C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\~Normal.dot It always seems to be the simplest solution is the correct one. As an FYI, I am using Office Professional Edition 2003 (SP3) with Windows Vista Home Premium. Thanks again! Jay
