Uninstall ALL versions of Sun Java, yours is out of date. Link is in my sig below

Have you defragged the hard drive recently?

If you havent, try this (www.defraggler.com)

It's free and its probably better than XP's.

698473 2008-08-18 23:59:00 Is your CPU overheating??

Download, install and run SpeedFan (www.almico.com) and tell us what it says under CPU temp.

698474 2008-08-19 00:14:00 The longer you use Windows, the more disordered your registry can become, especially if you regularly install and uninstall software . Many applications, on being uninstalled, leave behind “orphan” registry entries . They don’t remove all traces of themselves; causing problems such as sluggish performance, system lockups, or a bloated registry that takes longer to load on startup .

Empty the Temp directory regularly .

do a few of the performance tweaks yourself, if you have Windows XP . By default, EVERYTHING is turned on in Windows XP . It isn’t very streamlined for performance, but rather for appearance . You can turn off a few of the unnecessary features, and Windows will still work just fine, and maybe a little faster .

Streamline MSCONFIG .

Turn off Active Desktop .

Get rid of Spyware .

The NTFS file system contains at its core, a file called the master file table (MFT) . There is at least one entry in the MFT for every file on an NTFS volume, including the MFT itself .

Because utilities that defragment NTFS volumes cannot move MFT entries, and because excessive fragmentation of the MFT can impact performance, NTFS reserves space for the MFT in an effort to keep the MFT as contiguous as possible as it grows .

NTFS uses MFT entries to define the files to which they correspond . All information about a file, including its size, time and date stamps, permissions, and data content is either stored in MFT entries or in space external to the MFT but described by the MFT entries .

(Directory entries, external to the MFT, also contain some redundant information regarding files . But a full discussion of all the structures on NTFS is beyond the scope of this article . )

As files are added to an NTFS volume, more entries are added to the MFT and so the MFT increases in size . When files are deleted from an NTFS volume, their MFT entries are marked as free and may be reused, but the MFT does not shrink . Thus, space used by these entries is not reclaimed from the disk .

So . Sometimes backing up your stuff and doing a clean new install is the best cure .

You can change this in User CP in the Forum link bar.

As Pctek says, a reinstall can do wonders as Windows XP can get very sluggish after a while, but is not a job for the faint-hearted, come back to us for advice/instructions if you decide to do it. :)
Updating Internet Explorer to V.7 would help also as V.6 isn't very secure, personally I prefer Firefox (which I see you've got), much faster.
