698405 2008-08-18 07:19:00 a family member is looking to upgrade pc to handle photo editing.
just wondering if modern onboard graphics is enough for the job especially with large uncompressed files (ie video ram sufficient ??)

698406 2008-08-18 07:26:00 Any card will handle photos

I dont think the amount of video ram on it matters

why? i'm a little behind the times with hardware these days but i thought most onboard was about the same as botom end cards anyway ????
however just getting away from the onboard vid wasting the ram might be a real good idea.

698409 2008-08-18 08:43:00 Why?

Because I have built identical computers and experienced the one using on-board video lag behind even during non-graphical tasks and choke the PC to death when tasked with graphically intensive tasks.

I'd recommend a dedicated video card (or at the very least dedicated video ram in the case of a laptop) for all PC's unless the budget can't be stretched to cover it.

698410 2008-08-18 08:48:00 The memory on dedicated cards is always faster than system RAM also Agent_24 (57)
698411 2008-08-18 12:01:00 Nothing wrong with one of the new boards using the AMD 780G chipset with onboard ATI HD3200.
I can play hi-def videos with the onboard graphics with no problems at all.
2GB RAM woul,d be the minimum I would go for in a new PC.

698412 2008-08-18 12:27:00 I would think it would also depend on what application(s) are being used to edit photos as well.

Photoshop will grab all the RAM you can give it for example.

My thought is to get a dedicated video card.
