698322 2008-08-18 04:18:00 I have Toshiba laptop around 2001 vintage I bought it from tm about 5 years ago. Only been used a few times a year
It has an illegal copy of windows xp on it. Its so slow with xp and computer so old its not worth buying xp new. I would shout the bar if it has more than 64 mb of ram
I wonder if I could put w98se on it.
How do you a backwards os install?
Is it possible for it be home networked if it has different os to other computers?
Thanks

698323 2008-08-18 04:23:00 You can network any OS you want, it'll work

You can install any OS you like on it. Just as long as there's drivers for it

Otherwise, you wont have sound, or be able to network

You'll have to reformat the hdd, to install whatever OS on it

Just remember updates are no longer available for 98 or 98 SE. But you should be able to download the updates that were available

From the MS site

From memory I dont think you can boot from 98 cd need floppy disks.
If I cant run 98 I will junk the laptop xp makes it too slow.
It has a usb port is there a work around to get format hd and instal 98 without a floppy disk

698327 2008-08-18 10:03:00 Bring it to Mt Eden, I'll have it :D

You could probably fit 98 on a USB flash drive. If the laptop supports booting from one.

Only thing you can do is buy a external USB floppy

It does have a cd tho doesnt it?

698328 2008-08-18 10:05:00 yep it has cd drive prefect (6291)
698329 2008-08-18 10:11:00 Cant see why you cant copy the 98 files from the cd to another and somehow make it bootable.

ie: Like this (ntcompatible.com)

698330 2008-08-18 10:18:00 All Windows 98 CDs are bootable.

The only reason they has W98 Boot floppies is because some CD drives of the time did not support booting from CDs.

You could also try Windows 2000 Professional on it. Same codebase as Windows XP, but with only slightly higher system req's than 98.

698331 2008-08-18 10:28:00 I cant remember 98 being on floppy, I know 95 came on floppy

I've still got the original 95, and 3.11 floppies !
