457136 2006-05-23 07:15:00 I got this email from telstra today, wonder what they have up there sleeves? Anyone have a heads up?

17 May 2006

Recently, the Government made some significant decisions that will improve competition in the telecommunications market . Local loop unbundling, Naked DSL and a range of other techo terms have a lot of people in the industry very excited .

The only thing you really need to know about these is that they'll allow TelstraClear to offer better services to more customers at better prices .

Having fought for change for more than a decade and invested $1 . 5 billion in infrastructure, we're very excited about the future - as you may have seen in our recent full-page newspaper advertisements . It also means we're ready to make the most of opportunities .

From the calls and emails we've had from customers, we know that everyone is keen to see these announcements turned into better services as soon as possible .

While no one wants to offer better deals more than we do, it will take time for the announcements to be passed into law .

We could wait, but - as we say around here - Now's Good . Soon we'll be announcing some new broadband plans from TelstraClear for those who don't already enjoy fast, great value plans on our own network . They'll be the beginning of what is possible in an open, truly competitive market .

So, watch this space as TelstraClear continues to change the game .

Thanks for choosing us .

Well I'm depressed then. 1.5 billion to offer cable in Kapiti, Wellington and Christchurch.
So how much will it cost to cover all of NZ then, including all the curent dial up only rural areas?

Don't be to hard on Telstra, they did try and put cables into Auckland but the Auckland city council voted they were "ugly" , lol like the power lines that run on the same poles are pretty?

457139 2006-05-23 09:09:00 Telstraclear is a funny company in all three centres kapiti coast, wellington, christchurch, not one city has full telstrclear service in chch where i am only 60 percent of the city was ever cabled then they left why do they go to such great lengths to spend big money and only half do the job why not spend up big like they promised in the early 90s and finish the job off completely. I generally agree with you, but I believe they started in CHCH and Wellington as basically a test and because it was easy ish to get consent etc .

After being refused entry into the most populous city in NZ (Auckland), I too would loose motivation to go further, especially with Telecom calling ALL the shot (till recently of course) . I would think Auckland was a BIG part of there overall NZ strategy, and without it they would always be lagging behind in NZ revenue etc .

If Telstra put the cables under ground then we may have had them by now.
