| 455915 | 2006-05-19 01:06:00 | Edited: (www.nzherald.co.nz) "Peter Griffin: Digital immigrants have a lot to learn - and teach Friday May 19, 2006 Last week when I heard the terms "digital immigrants" and "digital natives" for the first time. They're technology catchphrases, so I should have heard of them before. The first is used to describe people who may surround themselves with technology but didn't grow up with it. The other is a term for those who are living and breathing the internet and digital content from an early age. The digital immigrants are instantly recognisable. Obviously, they're over 30, but it's their behaviour that gives away their newly arrived status in the digital world. They'd rather print out a letter and make changes to it on paper with a pen than edit a document on the screen. They're less adept at staying safe on the internet and are more likely to have their bank accounts cleaned out in "phishing" scams, like Upper Hutt couple Joanne Kinnaird and her husband Rob recently did. "We're all lulled into a false sense of security when there's no security. They should bring back passbooks or I'll be sticking to the mattress under the bed," Kinnaird told the Dominion Post. And digital immigrants are responsible for half the "faulty" electronics returned to stores in the United States. They actually work - but their new owners just can't operate them. The natives are just as easy to pick. You will find them hogging the nearest Xbox console or downloading music on the home computer while instant messaging their friends or playing Counter Strike online. They're growing up with newsgroups, blogs, wikis, instant messaging and online social networks." |

| 455916 | 2006-05-19 01:37:00 | Its very true. i heard the digital immigrants and natives term not so long ago at a seminar for my school's ICTPD cluster. They're trying inforce teaching with ICT e/g pp presentations, video and other media, interactivity such as games. It's all very well when the computers work but when the main gigabit switch that connects to the servers blows up and you have to replace it with a 100meg HUB things get ugly. It was so funny, a lot of staff didn't know what the hell to do in the time that the computers were down, the deputy principal went and mowed the lawns! ICT is good and its powerfull but we shouldn't rely on it too much ;) |

I may be termed a 'digital immigrant', but I have the advantage of being able to do the following: Measure things in inches AND centimetres Write (ledgibly) as well as type Operate in real life social circles (or just go in circles) Fire and real gun Drive a real car Hopefully all that makes me a better person, but I doubt it :) |

| 455918 | 2006-05-19 01:59:00 | only the older generation of "digital natives" grew up with newsgroups - they were outdated before my generation got into the "digital lifestyle" & only a small percentage of us have re-discovered newsgroups. The people that used newsgroups at the height of their popularity are more likely to be in their 30s or older now than in their teens or 20s. |
