698834 2008-08-31 11:10:00 I meant u cant install x64 on a 32 bit operating system, (ie: 2000/XP Home/Pro). It wont let you

I don't know what you meant to say earlier but you can't install an x64 bit O/S without a motherboard and cpu that will support same.

If you have a motherboard and CPU that support a 64bit O/S then you can run a 32bit O/S.

You can also create partitions and dual boot etc.

So Jack could run WinXP32, WinXP64, Vista64 and Linux if he wants to.

698836 2008-08-31 11:21:00 I have given up on vista 64 bit. It absolutely refuses to install on my computer. I think there must be something in my box that is not 64 bit compatable.
x9650 quad core cpu.
asus Striker ll Extreme M/B 1600 fsb
nvidia 9800 GX2 vid card.with 1 gig ram
4 gigs ddr 3, 1600 ram
1200 w psu.
Raptor ll 320 gig hdd at 10,000 rpm

I notice nothing on the web ste to say "not 64 bit compat." I just assumed that being the latest ,they would run either

I firstly tried to install without removing anything off the drive planning on running a reformat off the vista disk. It just would not even get far enough to off the format option. So I formatted the drive with the xp disk.
With a clean disk vista 64 jumped straight to the "installing files". But after a couple of minutes it would just lock up. It said it was installing but there was no computer activity. On one occasion I left it overnight . In the morning it was still at the same spot. When I tried to stop it, up pops a message saying it was still installing and if I stop now....etc. No message of any problem.
Anyway after three days I gave up and installed XP pro. I have just got the computer back to where it was before I started with vista.
The computer just flies with XP. O/clocked to 3.4 and using all four cores. The only problem is it only recognises 2.75 gigs of ram.
.

Yep. RAM will be a problem under that O/S. I have a legit copy of WinXP Pro 64 bit which I do not use any more as I went to Vista64 ultimate. PM me if you want it for free.
