698824 2008-08-20 11:40:00 Thanks for the tip speedy. :) snafu (14042)
698825 2008-08-20 20:17:00 I would say so, since the 64 bit version wont install (on a 32 bit system)

BTW Snafu, speaking of Windows 7, Server 2008 R2, according to most sites which will be out in 2010 is Windows 7 Server.

So, what you probably see, and get in Server 2008, you'll get in Windows 7

Speedy, I don't understand. What do you mean by a 64 bit motherboard?
32 and 64 will both run on same motherboard.
And 32 bit programs (some) will run with vista 64 bit>

What the hell. You have it around the wrong way.

x64 = 64Bit OS.
x86 = 32Bit OS.

You can't install an x64 OS on a 32Bit CPU (Back in the days of Single Core).

And you can install an x86 OS on a 64Bit CPU.

698831 2008-08-31 09:31:00 Not having any problems with 64bit Vista Ultimate, Video card drivers no worries. To be honest had a much better run with it compared to 32bit.

Watch the install though, it gets real grumpy if you have more than 3gb ram installed. I take most of mine out for the install, untill SP1 is installed then put it back.

File system wise, which was the gist of your original question, both are most likely NTFS so you should be sweet.

nothing but good things to say about 8gb of ram also :)

698832 2008-08-31 10:24:00 I have given up on vista 64 bit. It absolutely refuses to install on my computer. I think there must be something in my box that is not 64 bit compatable.
x9650 quad core cpu.
asus Striker ll Extreme M/B 1600 fsb
nvidia 9800 GX2 vid card.with 1 gig ram
4 gigs ddr 3, 1600 ram
1200 w psu.
Raptor ll 320 gig hdd at 10,000 rpm

I notice nothing on the web ste to say "not 64 bit compat." I just assumed that being the latest ,they would run either

I firstly tried to install without removing anything off the drive planning on running a reformat off the vista disk. It just would not even get far enough to off the format option. So I formatted the drive with the xp disk.
With a clean disk vista 64 jumped straight to the "installing files". But after a couple of minutes it would just lock up. It said it was installing but there was no computer activity. On one occasion I left it overnight . In the morning it was still at the same spot. When I tried to stop it, up pops a message saying it was still installing and if I stop now....etc. No message of any problem.
Anyway after three days I gave up and installed XP pro. I have just got the computer back to where it was before I started with vista.
The computer just flies with XP. O/clocked to 3.4 and using all four cores. The only problem is it only recognises 2.75 gigs of ram.

Take it down to 2gb Ram and it will install fine. :)

You may need to enable memory remapping in your BIOS to allow it to see all your ram.
