2008-08-19 00:03:00 | OK. Few things that can be tidied up. Firstly, disable Windows Defender, it's pretty much useless. To do that, click on start, all programs and windows defender. Click on tools, and scroll right down to the bottom of the page. Untick the box that says use windows defender. That was from memory so hopefully you can follow it. :) Spybot TeaTimer slows things down, Spybot is great, but not with Tea Timer. I'd uninstall Spybot through Programs and Features, then download the latest installation file, install it, but untick the boxes for SDHelper and TeaTimer during the installation. Remove all versions of Java and get the latest one from www.java.com I'd also uninstall Google Desktop Search, it slows things down. Now HJT... Run HJT again, and tick the following, then click fix checked. O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe" O4 - Startup: Adobe Gamma.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe O13 - Gopher Prefix: O23 - Service: Symantec Lic NetConnect service (CLTNetCnService) - Unknown owner - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe (file missing) O23 - Service: LightScribeService Direct Disc Labeling Service (LightScribeService) - Hewlett-Packard Company - c:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe\LSSrvc.exe Edit - Dammit Speedy :D

2008-08-19 00:07:00 | By "tick all those entries", am I including the one in bold, the "run google desktop search" one? Or do I have to somehow stop that running on startup - and if so, how? Should I tick all the ones in both posts above this one before clicking on fix checked? I'm a little confused...!
Beemer (6956) | ||
2008-08-19 00:12:00 | I should have left Speedy to it, hes too quick! :D You can tick all the ones Speedy and myself posted. Uninstall Google desktop search, and uninstall Spybot. This is before ticking those entries. Then reboot, then run HJT again and tick those boxes. :thumbs:

2008-08-19 00:45:00 | Right, think I've done everything right (but I couldn't figure out how to disable Windows Defender - can't seem to find any options for that) and I ran HJT again and checked the Symantec and Lightscribe boxes, then ran it again so I could post the results here to see if I've done it all as planned. However it now comes up with this box: For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any highjacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may not be able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click start, run, and type: notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and press enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts.' (with quotes), and reboot. For Vistas: simply, exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose 'run as administrator'. So I did the second one, and then scanned it again and this is what I got below. The Symantec and Lightscribe ones are still there so what should I do? Forgot to add - I don't have any Symantec products on the computer (or none I have loaded) and can't see any in the program list. How do I uninstall Google desktop search too? I can only find Google desktop in the list of programs, and when I uninstalled that, it was back again after I rebooted. | 698499 | 2008-08-19 01:05:00 | That looks better, tick this entry as well Then tick fix checked, close browsers O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe" If you've got a lightscribe burner, dont tick that lightscribe entry. Or else you wont be able to burn lightscribe cd's/dvd's

2008-08-19 01:25:00 | If you've got a lightscribe burner, dont tick that lightscribe entry. Or else you wont be able to burn lightscribe cd's/dvd's Doesn't make any difference, you just need to open the program before burning, which your burning program normally does for you. It doesn't need to be disabled, but it's just one more thing running that doesn't need to be. ;)

2008-08-19 02:24:00 | Right, done all that - but I'd still like a recommendation for an external hard drive to store all my photos and stuff on anyway! Please! And thanks for all your help so far.

2008-08-19 02:47:00 | Seagate are probably the best brand, they have a 5 year warranty. With external drives, it's normally the enclosure/psu etc that give up before the drive. They have the lowest failure rate of any brand of HDD.
wratterus (105) | ||
2008-08-19 03:02:00 | ^ :thumbs: Seagate FreeAgents are good if you want an all-in-one package. It might be cheaper to get a bare Seagate drive and a separate enclosure of your choice which has a long warranty and good PSU.
