457146 2006-05-24 11:11:00 Probabaly $20 billion plus cause under ground throughout nz is very expensive, still its a waste of money only putting 50 to 60 percent coverage in three cities what a shonky company, they came here all gung ho say they were going to do this and that and it hardly got off the ground or should that be underground, typical of telstraclear. 457147 2006-05-24 12:18:00 They are pushing this. I received their message twice yesterday and twice today ( so far) Arnie (6624)
457148 2006-05-24 13:05:00 I think the cost of putting the cable underground is much more expensive than laying the power lines on the surface

Costs of digging is much more than sticking poles every few metres!!

That might be the reason why it is so expensive and costing telstra heaps

But for me and a large proportion of NZers who live in small town New Zealand thier was never a promise or expectation of cable internet, and to be honest I couldnt really care less whos cable my internet or other services come down on .

My point is that maybe we are about to see another step forward in BBpricing or caps to everyone .

Good on them for making the first move in the next "round" .

457150 2006-05-24 21:35:00 I generally agree with you, but I believe they started in CHCH and Wellington as basically a test and because it was easy ish to get consent etc .

From memory Telstra did nothing for Wellington and CHCH . It was done by Saturn who Telstra bought out then proceeded to trash . .

Indeed, this is correct.

Telstra couldn't organise a p*ss-up in a brewery if you ask me. I dealt with them once - in 2 years they couldn't sort out an 0800 number for the company I worked for. I rang them every day for 2 weeks before I gave up in disgust.

457153 2006-05-25 06:10:00 The work stopped halfway because the economics were never there. It was totally obvious that the estimated $20 million to do Christchurch could never be covered by even the most opimistic numbers of customers. They didn't come with full pockets. They used borrowed money, and the lenders want real money in interest and repayments. :( Doesn't take long to go bust at that rate. Graham L (2)
457154 2006-05-25 06:43:00 Hi there, I heard that in 2008 there would be cheaper broadband to be in NZ...so this promises and deals by ISPs won't mean a thing for me..... Mr Wetzyl (362)
457155 2006-05-25 08:49:00 If the New Zealand government was serious about broadband connection for the whole country, they'd have done the honest thing and purchased Telecom's network. They would then use taxpayers money to roll out the cable.

And we'd all own it.

Unlikely? Air New Zealand ring a bell? Who owns the rail tracks today?

As for Telstra, they are a truely giant company which make Telecom look small. Telstra could squash Telecom, which in fact they are doing in Australia. You won't see anything from Telstra unless there is a buck fifty in it.
