457034 2006-05-24 09:02:00 Well I'm convinced. Went to visit friend who had NO antivirus and a family member who had a penchant for pr0n. As a result I got called in to find out why the computer was sluggish as well as myriad of other problems.

Ran adaware and spybot which found very little.

Downloaded and installed Avast, it prompted a scan on initial boot up which found more trojans and other nasties than I could keep a count of.

Well done Avast.

457035 2006-05-24 22:24:00 Well Done SAM.

RE: Sluggishness, my families PCs are installed with McAfee and another one with Symantec. Both are slow. I also tested McAfee recently and it was still a resource hog and quickly reverted back to AVAST again.

However, comments made previously makes me consider AVG as well for trial.

I like Avast, however I have never known anybody that has generally trialed both to not agree Avast is more resource hungry, and does slow the machine down a bit more when doing things like browsing folders etc.

Having said that I believe Avast has more features and possibly better protection than AVG, but for the speed freaks AVG is the way to go, its a no thrills effective anti virus.

457037 2006-05-25 21:50:00 Well I find it hard to believe you tried AVG and can state that but ill take your word for it lol

Yep, I did try AVG :p ! Twice, actually - last year I tried a newer version but still prefer Avast.

However, I would not rubbish AVG. Many people use it with good results.

457039 2006-05-29 04:19:00 I installed Avast! Pro bout 2 weeks ago . Not too bad at all .

The network shield isnt too bad .

lol, when I log onto the net thru this PC, Avast detects and blocks these LSASS attacks and DCOM exploit attacks .

BUT, when I 'm on the net, and going thru the other PC, there are no attacks from any kind from anywhere .

I havent noticed any slowdown either using Avast . I've tried everything else, and they're either bloatware, disconnect me when its installed, or tell me I've got non-existent viruses . I was also using ZA, until I did a scan with Avast and it detected a trojan in ZA's log file folder . lol .

So, that got the boot, and I installed Comodo Personal Firewall .

Not a bad firewall for a freebie . And this is free forever .

Downloaded this, sent an email for an activation code, and they'll send u one .

And you get updates free for life .

457040 2006-05-30 05:35:00 I reckon Nod32 is the best by a mile and it usually wins any comparison I've ever seen. Twelvevolts (5457)
457041 2006-05-31 02:22:00 The first site posted is a commercial site and not to be trusted. The 2nd one I haven't looked in to, but I'm suspicious of any site that is not related to a university or independent lab.

Sam "Ran adaware and spybot which found very little."

Umm, not surprising if it was virus/worm trouble. I don't use a defrager when cleaning the registry, so why expect a spyware/adware programme to track down viruses?? Mind you, it's a good policy to run them anyway, as there's bound to be some proportion of infestation from spyware in an insecure system.
