456875 2006-05-23 01:53:00 There seems to be a bit of confusion here .

"Free to air" signals from a satellite are free . (So, in fact, are the signals for the paid channels ;) ) .

The hardware you need to see the programmes isn't free . The decoder you need to see the paid channels isn't free either . That's how Sky can extract their money from the users) .

Your television does not receive the satellite frequencies . So you need a dish, with a little converter/preamp ("LNB") at its focus, and a cable down to a set-top receiver which will produce the signals your TV can use . These items cost money . You can rent them from Sky, or buy your own .

456876 2006-05-23 02:09:00 A saw a link from NZCity page last week to I think 'freetoairnz.co' or something. They sell different dishes/LNBs/boxes to get TVNZ channels and other overseas channels... some of the overseas ones could be interesting and may be worth investing in a dish/box that can get TV1/TV2. Once you've got the box it's yours (not rented like Sky's) and there are no monthly payments etc. I don't remember seeing being able to get TV3/Prime etc and of course you'd miss out on the sports channel. I don't remember seeing being able to get TV3/Prime etcAt the moment you can pick up the TVNZ trials. I believe TVNZ and Canwest will be offering official FTA services later this year from Optus D.
