698814 2008-08-20 04:16:00 I'm seriously considering changing from xp pro to vista ultimate 64 bit with sp1. Has anyone done this?

Can I get away with formatting C: and doing a fresh install. What I want to know is can I get away with leaving my other drives untouched? I have programs and files on D: and E:.

Thanks,

698815 2008-08-20 04:21:00 You'll keep all your files, as they both use the same filesystem.

As for programs staying installed in Vista 64, forget about it. Program installs are deeply ingrained in the registry, and I don't think it's possible to move them over with a new install.

698816 2008-08-20 04:25:00 Just make sure there are drivers if you do decide to get 64 bit

I'll be installing server 08 64 bit once i build this new system. Its basically the same as Vista. Same interface etc

Server 2008 doesnt take as long to install, its faster than Vista and you can also convert into a workstation. And do what you can with Vista

Yup, I've got a PDF on how to make it into a workstation. (Adding whatever Vista has, to it). Or disabling /enabling services. Adding things so, sound etc works

There is also a program that lets you select what you want / dont want, for Server 08 as well. So you can change it into a workstation. Its basically the same as the PDF, but does everything automatically. To save you doing it manually.

698819 2008-08-20 04:50:00 Drivers don't look like being a problem. I've heard glowing reports on vista 64 bit with sp1.

What's upsetting me is that I have just finished installing everything on my new computer and now it looks like I will have to do it again

698820 2008-08-20 04:59:00 Don't get Ultimate.

Get Home Premium or Business, depending on your needs. Business = Home Prem - Media Centre.

Ultimate is WAY too overpriced.

They both come in 64 bit - you'll need to pay for another disc though (about $20).

698821 2008-08-20 05:12:00 The only catch with 64 bit is that all of your apps need to be 64 bit to get any value from it.
If you have games that are written for 64 bit then go for it.

I would say so, since the 64 bit version wont install (on a 32 bit system)

BTW Snafu, speaking of Windows 7, Server 2008 R2, according to most sites which will be out in 2010 is Windows 7 Server.

So, what you probably see, and get in Server 2008, you'll get in Windows 7
