699906 2008-08-24 04:51:00 I'm a bit of an XP virgin(late updater), anywayI turned off Windows Update right from installation and sorted out my setup and and backup systems. After a few months I've done another backup and decieded it was a good time to turn on the updater and get right up to date, SP3 and all that. After turning on the updater I left the computer to do its thing, untill there was no more internet activity. Checking things out there seems to be a small number of updates, and large number of failed updates from over the period that I had the updates turned off. Microsoft had an update troubleshooter but I found it useless. How can I activate these downloads or redownload them so they can be installed?? PPp (9511)
699907 2008-08-24 05:01:00 Go to the windowsupdate site and see how many havent been downloaded.

And if youre broadband, select whatever you want, and download.

Or click on each + (and click on the link), then get the updates manually, then install them

Just dont download the drivers from that site

699908 2008-08-24 05:15:00 Sometimes XP SP3 breaks windows Updates.

To repair it go to This site here (www.softpedia.com) - download Dial A Fix, open the program put ticks in all the boxes then run it. (click on the Picture on the left and you will see the interface) Reboot then retry windows updates - should work.

The download link on that page is on the right hand side ,says "Download Dial A Fix."

699909 2008-08-24 05:18:00 If it aint broke dont fix it!

Install SP2, leave the rest alone. i have been running xp pro on 4 computers since 2001 and never had serious problems. If you have a recent copy of xp, sp2 is probably included.

No need for sp3 unless you have security problems. Just have a good firewall (zone alarm) & avg8 antivirus/anti spy.

Use Firefox 3 browser.

699910 2008-08-24 08:31:00 Thanks guys found the manual MS download site and did SP3, it seemed to reinvigorate Automatic update which suddenly found quite a few more updates. I'll keep the link thanks wainuitech. I'm well secured in all departments thanks Mzee, but good advice all the same. PPp (9511)
