I've been happily running xp pro for years but it has started to become a little unstable, ie programmes auto shutdown after a few minutes of operation or the systems just freezes up for no reason. Out with the xp installation disk for some setting recovery work, if I could get to that stage! Booting from xp cd loads all the drivers etc then hangs at the 'starting windows' screen.:( I know! I'm running two hard drives, I'll clean install vista onto the mostly empty drive and migrate my operating system over to vista. Vista didn't think so... Hangs during install at the same place xp does, no chance to make any selections. I even chanced my luck installing vista from, within xp, on the spare drive. All was going well 10% of files copied before xp decided it was being threatened and pulled the plug on the install programme!!!!!! Needless to say, I require help, alcohol just isn't helping anymore :waughh: Ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks |

| 699416 | 2008-08-22 20:42:00 | Sounds to me it's your hard drive, if both installations stops at the same, I would think it is the hard drive.. You got a spare drive some where? |

| 699417 | 2008-08-22 20:53:00 | Two things to check out for starters: Are you able to remove the XP hard drive and attach it to another computer as a slave? If you can, then scan it for any malware and viruses. I would also be suspecting the RAM. Do you have two sticks of RAM installed? If so, try removing one at a time to see if you can isolate a faulty stick. You can also download a memory diagnostic program - Memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com/). Look under the Free section and select "ISO images suitable for creating a bootable Memtest86 CD-ROM". You will need to burn this ISO to a CD as an "image" type file so that it is bootable. Just ask if you don't know how to do this. Let us know how you get on. :) |
