458706 2006-05-29 03:05:00 This all stems from a patent Sony took out about 4 years ago that would tie a lisence for the game into one single console, It just gets mutated and reported a couple of times a year to stir up ill-feeling towards the PS3.

Not that I care either way, seeing as they are all as bad as each other, and every single move they make is for the single purpose of making profit, but this is more then likely whipped up and spread by some Xbox fanboys.

458707 2006-05-29 09:18:00 Well I've been holding out for the PS3 over the Xbox 360 but IF this proves to be true I'll be going for the Xbox 360 after all ... Chemical Ali (118)
458708 2006-05-29 09:35:00 Sony have denied it. I didn't think they would do something like that - it would kill the rentals market. Greven (91)
458709 2006-05-29 10:06:00 They want to kill the rentals market, they make money off software not hardware. In Aussie they took the Video outlets to court 3 times in a row to stop them hiring out games.

What they don't want to do is hurt sales, Plenty of people buy games knowing they can sell them once they have played em through.

Have you look at the price of PS3?? I mean really...it's almost twice as much as Xbox 360..the only reason that I don't buy Xbox :badpc: ..because I hate Microsoft..but if Sony start to be so pain in the lower rear back side area, then I'll just have to stick with PC games

Hey Metla:

Here in the US, at least in SoCal where I live, there's a lot of places that usta make their money on video and dvd rentals. With that market drying up now, they have really turned on the games rentals...in fact where they usta have about 10% of floor space devoted to game rentals, they now have about 50 or 60% for that purpose.

That makes me wonder why in Australia they are fighting a war that has been played to the end anyway here in the States...I mean, if we have game rentals here en-mass, then why-o-why stir up the muck and try to make that activity illegal in your neck of the world?

Survival of places like HollyWood Videos, and BlockBuster and A&M are now dying for the lack of vid/dvd rent money. The total shift to game rentals is inevitable, I think.

They most likely denied it after the public reaction, but I'm sure they were the ones who let loose the rumor..

We have rentals that come by mail . . . . at a lot lower price and they take a lot of traffic off the floors of the rental stores . .

Some of the vid-shops are charging "hidden" fees in the form of late charges for returns, and this has infuriated many customers .

The profit line on dvd or vcr tape rentals is pretty slim to begin with, so you can imagine the glee some manager has when a return is actually late . They can in many cases charge you for the cost of the whole video . . . the full retail price which is usually a lot of $$ .

So, one can see that there's a lot of discontent with the big name rental stores .

Most people nowadays prefer to actually buy the tape/disc for later viewing and that's taking a big bite outts the rentals too .

The archiving laws make it attractive to actually own the movies so you have a legal right to rip them into your computers too . . . . . as long as you actually own and have control on the original that is .

So, the rental market is drying up . . . and it's a good thing too .
