458503 2006-05-28 14:30:00 Had a friend complain that their emails to their family with an aol.com account are now getting sent back to them, usually 5-9 days after sending. They rang xtra and was told that you will get an email within the next 2 days with the resolution. After a week or so without a reply they asked if I could have a look. After checking the headers etc it was clear that the mail was getting bounced at AOL. I gave xtra another call and managed to get someone who could give an answer, and was told that xtra has been banned from sending mail to the AOL domain, they had no idea if/when AOL will allow xtra to send mail to them. kwaka (10149)
458504 2006-05-28 21:33:00 Get your friend to open a Gmail account and use that for emails to AOL. FoxyMX (5)
458505 2006-05-28 22:35:00 Get your friend to close their Xtra account and get a new account with a better ISP and use that for emails to AOL.Fixed.

But seriously, it's not particularly surprising considering the cesspool that is the Xtra mail system. If it wouldn't be particularly crippling to our business I would've blocked them a long LONG time ago.

The fact they never respond to abuse complaints, spam/viruses originating on their networks, or run standard systems mailboxes (postmaster, abuse etc) doesn't help. :groan:

458506 2006-05-28 23:18:00 Wasn't this AOL blocking based on some block list mistakenly listing some Xtra static IP ranges as dynamic? Whether Xtra runs a cesspool is a separate issue :-) PaulD (232)

Whether Xtra runs a cesspool is a separate issue :-)AOL block based on the proportion of messages marked as spam by their users. If a particular host reaches a particular proportion of spam they'll get blocked.

AOL aren't stupid enough to use RBL's for straight out blocking.

458509 2006-05-28 23:57:00 I had the same problem with emails sent to an AOL (have heard some say A Oh Hell)...they would return with the "too long in the queue" excuse.

I actually thought it was solely an xtra problem and would be a temporary thing. As he told me that he'd been receiving emails from sources.

Spoke with my friend, the AOL account holder, last night. He had received two that I had re-sent to him yesterday. I set up a test, sending same email to him from xtra, hotmail and one forwarded from a kol account
and he would reply to each.

So far have had a reply to that sent from my hotmail account.

As a server it is up to xtra to sort out the problem with AOL and quickly.

Just to add to that, a lot of my mail sent via xtra to a friend in England is also returned.

Are they as untrusted elsewhere as they appear to be here??

But not more than a couple of weeks ago Xtra chagned the public facing IP addresses of their MTA's.

This is new hate they're feeling now.

458512 2006-05-29 01:31:00 ip addy dosn't make any difference if they are on the antispam list. it depends what spam filter they (aol) are useing and if xtra get on the list that that software uses.

i've struck it before, certain sites cannot be accessed by xtra users because xtra is on the banned list. i had to use a different ISP to get to those sites.
