| 458546 | 2006-05-30 02:21:00 | Uh, how is that proof of anything? By that logic Dell computers kick arse, a Big Mac is the worlds best burger, Oprah is the fat end of all that is worth knowing, and Nsync are the greatest band to have ever walked the earth. we are talking about PLAYING as well as watching, not simply purchasing a product. Big difference. |

Just like reality TV outstrips unreality TV for viewers . Hang on though, using the reality TV example, couldn't there be a lowest common denominator factor creeping in here? Actually, creeping might be a wee bit deceptive, anway, I see soccer's main advantage, over other mass appeal team sports, as being it's low tech equipment and field requirements and relatively simple rules that even the stupidest people can derive a sense of achievement from getting most of them about right, cripes even animals can participate . |

I don't know what is worse being hit on the head with a handbag or having your face stuck near someones sweaty bawbag. Football is elegant, rugby is just brute force and Cauliflower ears. mode3 |

People don't enjoy watching the game because it makes them feel superior, or because they believe the game is superior than others (tho I'm sure most do). They watch it because, dum da! It's exciting! Why else? Anyhow, we can argue till the cows come home over which game is better. You don't like football, thats fine. But please remember, animals probably could participate, but they wouldn't be able to control a 60 metre goal kick with one touch, or play a 40 metre through ball with the outside of the right foot whilst looking the other way to set a team mate 1 on 1 with the goalie a la Ronaldinho in the Champions League semi final. Football is an incredible delicate, skillful game for truelly gifted individuals. And yes, you are ALL right! Let's get rid of the hollywoods! You won't find anyone that will argue with you on that one! :) |

Mind, with all the precious tosh that presented itself for duty here, after a mere scratch of the surface, I'll give that aspect some serious consideration and get back to you  Yep, I've seen various shows featuring animals playing soccer, but I was really hoping you'd pick up on the word "participate" . You see, at least the weapon of choice in rugby circles is the good old handbag, not darts and carpet knives ;) |

Football is elegant, rugby is just brute force and Cauliflower ears . mode3 I get it now . Ballroom dancing is elegant, board diving is elegant so football is for elegant people dancing and diving around for 90 minutes . Rugby is brute force - yep, end of story or is it . . . . Zinzan's 40 metre drop kick against Sth Africa . John Kirwins length of field run zig zagging past the entire Italian rugby team . Don Clarke's boot . Christian Cullen's 'houdini' from inside the goal line past 3 Fijians in the 7's final . Carlos Spencer's slight of hand . Michael Jones' dive over 2 Aussies to secure a ball in md air then off load to JK and who can forget Andy Hadens lineout 'dive' against the Welsh , yep Rugby has it's hollywoods but in all my years that is the only one I have ever seen . Watch any pro football/soccer game and they have at least one a game . I agree there is a lot of skill in soccer, but that is only with the foot . Rugby requires skill with the boot and hands . Although league is my sport of choice I know I will end up watching the semi's and the final's of this years World Cup - sport is sport . My pick - Netherlands . |
