457835 2006-05-28 01:41:00 Bully for you. The unbundling would have had nothing to do with any speed increases, nor price reductions. Tow the British Isles down to the South Pacific to enjoy the better climate. But their telecommunications prices would rise sharply, because they wouild then be at the end of a very long, very expensive, line. That's what costs. That's what will never get cheaper. 457836 2006-05-28 01:50:00 Hang on - moving data is getting cheaper all the time, they are coming up with ways to put more and more data through the same piece of copper/alumium cable (dialup/ISDN/ADSL/ADSL2/ADSL2+) and fibre all the time. Same thing applies to satalite links. So the prices should be coming down.

Part of the problem in NZ in that telecom charge for local loop and exchange back to an ISP. When unbundling starts there will be an initial high cost to put equipment into the exchange but the day to day charges should decrease.

Um. hmmm. You forget that theres a LOT of other things that go into moving data NOT just cables. Every time you upgrade your servers to deal with more data, you need to pay for it. You need to pay for the DSLAMs at the exchange (which will be expensive - ADSL2+ DSLAMs or whatever won't be cheap).

Data isn't just cables. Thats only half of it.
