699684 2008-08-23 15:56:00 right this is starting to annoy me

you make a statement about a well known program which as far as I am aware is very respected

for some reason you seem to have an attitude here

you are generally very helpful to other people but you dont seem to want to back up your statement here. why ?

I've asked nicely

whats your problem ?

I have asked a genuine question and I dont think the tone of your repsonses is really up to scratch.

699685 2008-08-23 15:58:00 i am not going to google it

YOU have the info

you made the statement

I asked for some clarification

since when have you simply stated to other questioners

'look in google'

get over yourself

699687 2008-08-23 22:23:00 Guys ... no need to get hostile over it.

The whole "teatimer" issue interests me too. I've always disabled it when installing Spybot Search & Destroy just because I've heard word of mouth that it causes problems. Is it a historical problem that has now been resolved in newer versions? As it monitors registry changes, I could imagine it would go nuts when you were installing programs unless it has an "installation mode".

I did some searching and found that teatimer uses more RAM because it monitors the registry differently (source: SpyBot Tea Timer memory usage (forums.techguy.org)). This could account for older computers, like Winnie's, running slow with it enabled.

One of our members, Pancake (forums.pcworld.co.nz) is an expert in malware with membership to some respected anti-malware groups. Following the link in his signature on "Preventing Malware and hints on how to avoid Re-infection" it led me to this page (wiki.castlecops.com). Under antispyware it had this to say:

SpyBot S&D has one cool tool built into it called TeaTimer'. The TeaTimer monitors the system continuously, protecting system files and the registry from malware. SpyBot S&D also adds a browser helper object (BHO) to Internet Explorer. By using this, SpyBot S&D blocks the bad downloads (like installation of ActiveX components or other BHOs installed by spyware without the user's knowledge) automatically. These two programs are a "must have" on every computer.

I guess if your system is running slow (and it is known to be 100% clean) and disabling teatimer improves it, then turn it off. If not, then leave it running.

Be interesting to hear Pancake's opinion on this.
