699208 2008-08-23 01:14:00 If theyre all on the net as well.

If you get hit by something (ie: a worm / trojan, if it targets shared files / folders), all of your files will be affected . Including windows files.

Which is why you should never share all of the main hdd / the hdd with Windows on it.

If its connected to the Internet

All are in same room and used by my partner and myself only. things you need to make sure are correct;

1. All PC's are on the Same workgroup
2. Make sure each PC has a different name, you can not have two or more the same on the same LAN, Example of what will work - minister1 minister2 minister3 etc
3. In the firewall, make sure the full range is set to 10.1.1.1 - 10.1.1.255
4. Only share the folders that need it, the whole drive is dangerous
5. In the Router's IP settings, try changing the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0
6. As a test, make sure all PC's are set to obtain address automatically. - open the control panel, double click network Connections / Right click Local Are Connection / Properties / Internet protocol (TCP/IP)/ Double click it or Properties button.
7. IF its still not connecting, open Control Panel/Firewall, make sure the Windows one is turned off.
8. IF still not seeing one another,Get the IP address's from each PC, then open a command prompt, type in ping 10.1.1.4 ( if thats a address from another PC) press enter, see if it reply's or times out.

If it times out try ping 10.1.1.1

699210 2008-08-23 05:35:00 Thanks for all your help.
I took Eset off PC 2 and put Avast on instead.
Problem had to have been somewhere in the Eset default settings as now PC 2 is sharing and visible on the network.
Bit of a shame as Eset is good antivirus.

Before taking PC 2 off eset, I tried to ping it at 10.1.1.4 and got a reply

699211 2008-08-23 05:58:00 I think I found where your problem may have been - if you opened the settings in the Firewall - and selected "Change the protection Mode of the computer in the Network' (as highlighted in the Pic below) then select Sharing - it may have worked. If this is not selected you can Ping, but of course not share. That's all offered / asked in the setup when the software is installed.

See the Location I'm meaning in This picture here (www.imagef1.net.nz)

ALSO I always set the firewall to interactive mode, highlighted/ pictured In this picture (www.imagef1.net.nz)

699212 2008-08-23 06:36:00 Been trying to reply to this but keep gettin PM"s ... and I'm a slow typer lol

Thanks again Wainui but as you say this is offered in the set-up and was already set to share.

You have put in a lot of effort trying to help and it is very much appreciated.

In the meantime at least, I shall stick with the Avast on PC 2, simply because the full sharing is working.

Thank's again:clap
