699841 2008-08-24 01:01:00 Recently made the transition from Win98 with an internal Nokia ADSL modem that never gave me a problem.
My new fast processor, large memory computer using Vista Home Premium with a new external modem is continually freezing on IE and FF3.
Blamed AVG so changed to Avast, still same problem.
Thinking it could be the Vista's over protective shields.
This happened before the Olympics so don't think its video streaming causing overloads in our rural area.
Thought of changing ISP's, but it only started with the new setup.
Any help will be appreciated

When you say "new external modem is continually freezing on IE and FF3"

Can you explain a bit more on what’s happing??

Can you not get any internet access when the modem freezes??

What type of external modem do you have??

Have you tried a different external modem??

699844 2008-08-24 01:19:00 Hi Stu,

ISP is: Xtra.
External modem is: Dynalink DSL-502T

Sometimes I can get straight on with either browser.
Other times it says cannot connect, etc

Or you may get the home page, probably out of the cache and it will not go any further.

If I close the browser and go straight back in, often it will connect.
So many variables.

Thanks.

699845 2008-08-24 01:25:00 Sounds a bit like the modem can you try a different one? gary67 (56)
699846 2008-08-24 01:34:00 Will see if I can borrow a different type of modem and give that a try.

You can be browsing away OK then things just stop.
If you waited long enough it cranks up again - - -

Have allowed popup and similar but it still stops without any obvious reason.

Thanks

699847 2008-08-24 01:55:00 Do you have a firewall running, if so which one? gary67 (56)
699848 2008-08-24 03:19:00 isposure shows some wild fluctuations in browsing speed in my area ie 4-28KBytes/sec PPp (9511)
699849 2008-08-24 08:07:00 Only software modem I know of is the vista one on board.

The modem says its got a firewall?

699850 2008-08-24 08:11:00 Sorry, the only firewall I know I have on board is in Vista.

But the modem says it has SP1 Firewall protection?
